Hi guys! I am currently a freshman at University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. It is my first semester, and i'm really homesick. I've always wanted to go to northwestern because it is near my home and it is an amazing school that I think I would be a good fit for. In high school, I was one of those smart slackers. So even though I had the potential and took all AP classes, I had a "meh" gpa (a 3.3 unweighted, 6.5/7 weighted). I was top 10% of my high school class (with my weighted GPA), 30 on my ACT and I got rejected from Northwestern the first time around.

In college its my first semester. Due to homesickness I could be doing better, but at the rate I'm going I am looking at a 3.3 in a molecular and cellular biology major. Next semester my classes are super easy so I probably will do much better.

Is it possible for me to transfer into Northwestern this year? Should I just transfer into Loyola now, and then try for northwestern once I raise my GPA?

In general, what GPA would it take for me to transfer into Northwestern given my academic past? I would give up anything to be near home.

Well, you were rejected not even a year ago, and considering you’ve been in college all of 3 months, you’ll probably be rejected even if you had a 4.0. (Your hs stats matter a lot at this point).

Realistically speaking, you probably need a 3.8+ to get into NW

a 3.8? Wow, lol I had no idea it is easier to get into medical school than it is to get into Northwestern…especially since my cousin got in with a 3.5. Alright then, i’ll just forget that plan…if I had a 3.8 I wouldn’t want to transfer anyways.

There are exceptions (not everyone with a 3.5 will get into NW medical school). And I’m saying you need a 3.8 to be very competitive.

do my HS credentials matter much if I apply my sophomore year?

Not really. They may carry some weight, but, at that point, they’ll care more about what you’re doing (and what you’re trying to do) in college.

hey man i feel your pain, i am currently away from home at a school and i hate it i want to transfer closer to home as well.

The most important component is the essays…I think you should consider reapplying after two years in your current college.
