Bravo, NU, for the wise decision to cancel Monday’s classes. Frostbite does not look good with purple.

Frontier took off from NJ to Midway just now.

Some counties in the Northwest Indiana (south of Chicago) are forbidding all non-emergency vehicles from driving on the roads and declaring it a state of emergency.

If they declare Chicago area roads a state of emergency, then even if students arrive at the airport, how will they get to the university? Better pack food and extra cash.

Train service from Milwaukee Airport to Union Station is also a good option. There is a free shuttle to the Airport Rail Station.

From Wiki:

“The Milwaukee Airport Rail Station’s primary functions are to serve as an airport rail link for General Mitchell International Airport and to serve as an alternate to the downtown Milwaukee station for residents of the southern portions of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The station is served only by the Amtrak Hiawatha Service, and sees fourteen daily arrivals, seven each from Milwaukee and Chicago Union Station.[2] The station is the first stop en route to Chicago, with a travel time along the 8-mile (13-kilometer) section taking 10 minutes.[2] It is also the third stop en route to Milwaukee, with a travel time along the 78-mile (126-kilometer) section taking one hour and 14 minutes.”

But rail services may also be delayed during severe weather.

Weather forecasts are fairly accurate now. Next time I would suggest moving the flight up a day, if possible, and pay for a hotel or call a friend for an extra night’s lodging.

Our strategy for winter travel is to book a direct flight on a large plane late morning or very early afternoon. So far it has worked well, even yesterday, though no guarantees.

NU is closed tomorrow (Tuesday) too!

Update on the flying adventure: so my son really, really wanted to get back to school (even though there are no classes tomorrow) so he worked the website and 800# until he was he was put on a flight out of Hartford tonight. All of the rest of the flights today were cancelled. There was an hour delay, and all of the passengers who were continuing on to California were told not to board as they would not be continuing on…but he is finally in the air and will land soon in the frozen Midwest (not that it’s that great here in New England either.) One thing we learned from this experience was that Southwest seats are very fluid, they opened up at random times during the day. You just have to keep checking the website. Maybe our experience will help someone else!
