What happens to international students during vacations?

What do international students do during school vacations if they don't travel back home? Does Carleton become a boring old ghost town or are there still some people there to hangout with?

You can apply for housing in one of the dorms or you can sublet an off-campus house over breaks. Lots of students, both international and domestic, get break jobs on campus or stay here to conduct research.

I’ve never stayed over break myself, but I have a lot of friends who have – I’ve heard that summer in particular is fun. Obviously it helps if you have some friends who are also staying for break.

Well, Carleton isn’t exactly a “town,” but Northfield in general is a pretty quiet place even when students are in class.

More people choose to stay on campus during spring break than winter holiday (my guess) since the break is shorter (2 weeks v. 6 weeks). The only drawback is that while Carleton offers you a place to stay, it does not offer access to the dining halls, and only the Cafe is open. For some people, this isn’t a problem because they know how to cook (or they dislike cafeteria food, anyway), but for someone like me who knows next to nothing about cooking and doesn’t venture out of campus frequently, it can be devastating.

A lot of international students stay on campus. It’s really easy to get housing over break and northfield is fun!

Quite a few international students also take advantage of breaks to travel around the US since a lot of them have never really “been” in America. Some of my international friends are in Chicago or New York City right now (Spring Break).

I’m not international but I’ve stayed on campus for breaks. Generally, although it’s much quieter, breaks are still fairly lively. Over December break, all the students who lived on campus lived in the complex (Burton/Davis/Sevy), so it was pretty busy, especially since the swimming/diving and basketball teams were also there, as well as international students and students styaing to work there (like me). If you don’t live in the Complex you either get assigned a room there or can make an agreement with a friend who lives there. Spring break is similar, except that I believe students stay in Myers/Evans/Watson. However, since most of the on-campus students are consolidated into one or two buildings over break it doesn’t feel terribly empty.

For summer break a lot of people tend to sublet houses/apartments in Northfield as well, and it’s pretty busy.
