What Happens to Old Applications?

Okay, you can tell me to get a life. But I recently started wondering about this question because of my family circumstances. IDK maybe I'm just weird, has the question crossed the mind of anyone else on this forum? My first son just finished his freshman year at a very competitive program/college and my second son is about to apply to colleges this fall.
Does anyone know what they do with all the college application packages after April 1 or the appropriate admission notice deadline? My guess is they probably shred the things, but I also wondered if the admissions applications become a part of the college students file? Well if anyone knows or thinks about this let me know.

Some colleges will keep your app on file for 3 yrs in the off chance that you will transfer there(if you were accepted and decided against it). I rememer a note from CMC to my son saying that and one from my D at one of her colleges. I'm not sure what happens otherwise.

Planning on reusing some of S1 material for S2? Must be tempting! Why reinvent the wheel? :D

catbr I wondered that too...if because the first rejected said school would a subsequent child have trouble? My kids are spaced closely.

My bunny eats them.;)

Ah, an evirnomentally sound proposition mini...shall we direct them all your way? :)

He seems to like the ones with large numbers of attachments best. Doesn't seem to mind use of the common application. Totally trashes any CDs or videotapes enclosed.

We had the opposite, my D applied to 1 school my S applied to and he was accepted but didn't go there. It was my D's number 1 school however but they didn't accept her. She had a lot of the same activities as my son, a little lower GPA and SAT but she was accepted to most all her other schools. I'm wondering if her brothers app affected her, it is a small college of only 1,000 but then again she may have been rejected all on her own. At Trinity they asked my D if her brother applied the year before, the scholarship committee remembered his application when they were doing hers. This was 1 year apart however and smaller schools. Catbr, is your son applying to some of the same schools as his brother?
