What happens

the 2nd year of college? I mean, can I still live in the dorms and will ucd still pay me to live in the dorms…?
I received about 21k in aid…which leaves me with little to pay out of pocket…
I know financial aid is subject to change accordingly to the economy but…
theoretically, if the economy stays the way it is now, will
i get the same aid? or roughly around the same aid (income is constant every year)?
Is it possible to live in the dorms all 4 years? I’m pretty sure I’d like to do that if Davis paid for it hahaha xD

I think it’s generally freshmen that live in the dorms, and students move into the on-campus apartments by their second year. This doesn’t mean second-years don’t live in the dorms at all, but I think there is only a one-year guarantee. (unless you become an RA)
I am also pretty sure you can apply financial aid towards the apartment rent, and that the apartments are cheaper than the dorms. (especially if you double)

that’s too bad. i hope by 2011-2012 sophomores can stay in dorms if they choose to. i was talking with my son about that, and he wants to stay in the dorms for at least two years as well if at all possible. just seems more reasonable for freshmen and sophomores to stay on campus.

there must be sophomores who stay on campus (who aren’t RAs), aren’t there…???

I’m sure you will find second-years who live on campus, but I just don’t think it’s common because there is only a guarantee for incoming freshmen and transfers. He would also be living with a lot of freshmen provided he can get into the dorms. But the apartments are not more inconvenient at all - on-campus apartments are a five-minute walk from campus, and my friend’s cousin said she actually gets to class quicker than she did from the dorms because there is a bus that goes from the apartments to the Silo (middle of campus). Rent is also cheaper, I believe. The only thing I am concerned about is that I can’t cook, and won’t have a meal plan xD (I thought students lived in the dorms for two years too)

i am a 2nd-year living in the dorms again, so it is possible

not everyone gets asked if they want to live in the dorms again, idk how it works. most ppl dont want to live in them again anyways just bc they r ready to move on

on-campus apartments r super hard to get, and mostly reserved for either transfers or family housing. i think only colleges at la rue is really open for the general student population. again, very hard to get! altho def. the cheapest around, you get more bang for ur buck if you go off-campus it seems anyways tho. there is no bus that runs on-campus, just the usual unitrans routes to the silo/MU

maylix: i knew that students were encouraged to move off campus after their first year because that was what the tour guide told us when we came up for a visit. she was a bit vague about sophomores though, so i was hoping that they aren’t essentially forced off of campus. 18/19 is a little young to be living in your own apartment in my opinion. and cooking is an issue for my son too, lol.

cutie: so u have to be asked to return to the dorms as a sophomore? i guess i’ll call the housing dept. this week because i’d like to know more about the process. are there other sophomores in your room with you? or are u dorming with freshmen? agewise, there isn’t that big of a difference anyway.

Oh yeah my friend’s cousin also told me you have to apply for the on-campus apartments as early as possible because they are so difficult to get…I’m not sure where you live otherwise though. I’ve only visited those apartments xD

I hope there is a way for second-years to live in the dorms again, and that there are a fair number of second-years that do. Please let me know if you get some answers! =D

i am housed with other sophomores in my room/suite. i think the whole 2nd floor is sophomores maybe. im in castilian south tho, so it is mostly transfer students on the other floors. cant tell the difference anyways.

yeah not everyone was asked if they wanted to reapply for dorms i guess. i think if u expressed interest in it (ie on random housing email surveys thruout the year checking the box that you would be interested in dorming again) you are more likely to get asked.

The vast majority of students live off campus after freshman year. The options for on-campus living after that point (unless you’re a transfer student) are limited. The Colleges at La Rue and several other complexes are on-campus, but these are generally for grad students or undergrads with families (it is possible to get in if you are not in these groups, but it’s tough). Living off campus is not too much trouble–Davis is very bike-able, and there’s a good bus system (I still bike almost everywhere, and I live in far north Davis). Rent is much cheaper in a private complex, and in many cases you are closer to grocery stores and restaurants…

after speaking with someone in housing, i was told that freshmen can and do request to live on campus for their sophomore year. somewhat like cutie said, you need to fill out a request that you’ll receive (via e-mail?) towards the end of your first quarter, then meet another deadline and pay the application fee the following spring. of course, you’ll need to be a student in good standing and meet all deadlines in order to qualify.

so there are options for those of you who would like to stay on campus a second year.

as for junior and senior year…???

I’m guessing it’ll be the same way for juniors and seniors. There are a few juniors that are still living in the dorms as of today, and these juniors are not transfer students. Granted, since they are most likely to be 20 or older, they will have to live in Cuarto if they really wish to stay in student housing.

For the second year, students will move out to off campus apartments, as mentioned before. Second year housing at the dorms is rarely offered; the only reason they offered it this year was because of deep budget cuts towards the incoming freshman class. There were too many rooms available at Cuarto so they decided to offer it to transfers and second years.

I’m a second year and I’m living Cuarto in a shared suite with two second years and a freshman. There is a huge change second year housing won’t be offered next year because no survey was sent out this year asking if anyone would consider it. I doubt there will be the year after as well since they’re remodelling much of Cuarto next year and moving the residents over to the new buildings in Tercero.

Getting an on-campus apartment (such as the Colleges at La Rue) is tough so many end up on off-campus apartments. It’s not impossible to get one but your best bet is know someone who’s already living there and sign on to their lease. Or enter the College’s lottery, which doesn’t guarantee much to begin with but I managed to snag an apartment from it this year.
