What high school courses should I take to apply as a sociology major

Hi, I am a rising senior planning to apply as a sociology for college. What classes should I have taken or take for a sociology major?

My high school courses I have taken:
-AP Human Geography, AP European History, and AP U.S. History
-English 9, 10, and AP Language and Composition
-Health/CCR
-Geometry Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and AP Statistics
-Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
-Spanish 2, 3, and 4

My Senior year schedule

  • Intro to Psychology (CC class)
    -AP Chemistry
    -AP Gov
    -AP Calculus
    -AP Spanish
    -English 12

There are no specific high school courses in that subject area (social sciences and statistics are somewhat related, but you have those), so just take a well rounded college prep base curriculum. It looks like you have most of that. Some questions:

  • At community college, is introduction to sociology available that you can take instead of introduction to psychology?
  • Any reason you are taking regular English instead of AP English literature?
  • Are you applying to any colleges that want to see a visual or performing arts course?

Actually I am taking introduction to psychology this summer. Most of the summer classes are full and I was able to only sign up for introduction to psychology. I do plan to take a CC class my senior year. I can’t take AP English literature as it can’t fit my schedule.

What do you plan to do with your sociology degree? Your other threads and your posting name indicate engineering as your focus. Is this just a “Trojan Horse” strategy to get into an institution and then attempt to change majors? If so, how viable is it?

Originally, I plan on applying civil engineering to most of the UC colleges and some as sociology major. As I am going to start my college application soon, I thought I might apply sociology and switch to engineering for one of the UC colleges. My friend was able to switch her major to engineering this year.

The UC’s admit by major into Engineering and yes it is possible to switch into Engineering later, but it is not always guaranteed and very dependent upon UC campus. Much easier to switch out of Engineering than to switch into Engineering.

@ucbalumnus asked a VERY important question which affects admission to the UC’s:

At many UCs, it is difficult to change into an engineering major after enrolling.

If civil engineering is really what you want to study, apply as a civil engineering major.

I’d drop the Psych class if you can get into AP Lit.
