What holiday gifts are you buying (or receiving)?

We gift advent calendars on Thanksgiving. H asked me if me if he should buy mine. I said no. (He would have spent too much money on something not quite right.) Bought myself holiday socks. Thinking about going DIY next year!

I usually order a dozen fancy olive oil from a friend, who has an olive farm in CA. I usually give them out to guests who come to D1’s place on xmas day. Last year I was going to skip it, but people asked D1, “Is your mom going to give out olive oil again?”

That’s a great gift. Good olive oil is a treat.

Hmm, flirting with supporting local company that sells olive oils and basaltic vinegars but the $9 for 2oz price tag is pretty off-putting.

I’d be very interested in a lower-priced source willing to ship to HI & elsewhere. I’m very interested in consumable gifts.

Anyone with suggestions on lower cost olive oils?

I don’t know if they ship to Hawaii BUT I think they are based in California so maybe! Good olive oil or balsamic vinegars (would also make a wonderful edible gift) are not cheap! But a couple of Instagram cooks I follow really love Uncle Berch’s:

My youngest brother has 3 little ones (ages 8, 6 and 3). I always give them gift cards for Christmas so they can choose something they like, but I think instead I am going to get them each an advent calendar this year. We will see them on Thanksgiving at my parent’s house and I can give these to my brother and SIL and they can have the kids open them on 12/01. I am going to choose ones that they can build or make something each day. This is fun for me too!

I buy a local specialty balsamics for gifts too. They are pricey but worth it, especially the ones for bread dipping.

Not to turn this into the Advent calendar thread but…not 24 days but 12 and I think this would be a fun gift for a soup lover! For people at home who love soup, for someone who works to take to the office…for a college student to warm up in their room…

If you are thinking spices (kind of got lost as to who was thinking of spices and others just looking for a way to ‘box’ a self made Advent Calendar), I want to warn you about TSA.

I was visiting friends and brought them a set of spices from Savory Spices. They were all in glass jars and in the original box. I think there were 10 or 12, probably 1-2 oz jars. TSA was not thrilled with them. They opened the box, looked at the individual spice jars (which were factory sealed), talked to a supervisor, scanned them again…It took about 10 minutes to get through and I really thought I was going to have to throw them out. They finally let me through, but I doubt they would have if I’d filled the jars myself.

So, just be warned, or warn your kids to check them in luggage.

I’m thinking of buying macadamia nut oil through Oils of Aloha as gifts, plus some other small gifts and or gift cards.

Also right now, they’re having a special promotion of free shipping at Oils of Aloha. I just called them to ask if I could order 40-48 bottles of plain 12 oz mac nut oil and have it delivered after 10/20 ( when I return to Oahu). Also asked about any quantity discount. Will see what they say. I think it’s a perfect gift for many on my list—light oil that has a very mild flavor and high smoke temperature.

Ok, I’m set! Just ordered 4 cases of 12 bottles each of plain mac nut oil, 12.7 oz shipped to arrive after I get back on or after 11/21 or later. Price/bottle is modest $8.33 apiece with tax after 10% quantity discount, free shipping. It will make nice gifts for many friends, family and others on my list. I’m not too sure about shipping it but will see how the company packs to ship.

D23 is a freshman in Boston and I thought I’d get her a nice parka for Christmas but she just texted me that she is already freezing. So she might need it now. I also wanted to get her a Tiffany silver bangle bracelet. I’m torn because I think it would be a nice gift, classic, something she’d have forever. But…her style is more boho. I don’t want to foist my fancy 1980’s Lady style on her. I looked at David Yurman but that’s not her style either. Still thinking.

get that jacket to her ASAP - it is cold already in Boston
Maybe you can get her a cute hat and gloves to complete it for a holiday gift

Yes… jacket now, even if it is a cheapie one (tried on a nice hooded 32 degrees parka in Costco today - $29.99).

It is dreary today in CO, but cold/damp…. something more common back in my NY days than here. Brrrr - it felt cold!

Yikes. Get her a nice down coat asap. Lululemon? Canada Goose? The latter is $$$!

If you want to splurge, Canada Goose makes hats and gloves. They’re awesome.

Chan Luu has some gorgeous jewelry that is more boho than Tiffany or Yurman. Also Sundance catalog has beautiful jewelry she might like.

If you’re looking for alternatives, ED Levin (eldesigns) has some nice jewelry.

I just order a 5 sample oil and vinegar set from the Oliviers & Co. website. They are having a sale today(HELLO15 discount code) plus free shipping. For my son and daughter in law, who like to cook.
