I got the “iconics” gift pack. Items are small (which I knew from the description) – I think D and SIL will enjoy trying everything in the box. I also got hazelnut chocolate spread and orange marmalade as stocking stuffers for everyone.
@mathmom, what I meant was, she realized she wouldn’t have access to our library for physical books anymore, while away at school. That’s why she suddenly decided a Kindle would make more sense when she was leaving for college. She does have the Kindle app on her phone, which she has used, but it’s not ideal for e-books since it’s a small screen.
Hard to tell without knowing the person a little, but throwing out a couple of generic suggestions - very soft flannel pjs, or a soft sweatshirt, in a color or pattern you think they’d like. Wine and chocolate are also generally hits.
Am making quilted portrait pillow covers. Did this for S1 and GF two years ago and at first I didn’t think they were crazy about them. They’ve since brought in a feral, so I thought I’d make another pillow. GF said in August, “Oh, I’d love a quilt pillow for Cocoa!” So, good thing I already had that in mind, and glad they were appreciated! S1 doesn’t need anything and if I see anything cool, he has already bought it. If I hauled my backup sewing machine to CA, I’d take GF out to buy fabric and make costumes for her LARP productions. Will have to ask S1 what would be a good option.
S2 will get a pillow for his cat Yuri. New DIL and her mom have a dog (pup lives in Kyiv with her mom), and I think I will make a pillow for each of them as well. Am deciding on which paper-pieced Jack Russell pattern to get. Otherwise, will probably get DIL some good jeans (it’s hard to find 14 Talls in Ukraine) and sneakers for both of them. DIL and S2 both wear large shoe sizes that aren’t typically available. Here, I just get on Zappos. It will take a month for their package to arrive.
H and I are going to British Columbia for our 40th anniversary, then to CA to see S1/GF and other friends. That’s our gift. We have defaulted to travel or restaurants for holidays and celebrations.
Mine would like power tools or a lawn mower or an epoxy kit for her garage floor.
My other daughter will get the traditional cashmere sweater (Macy’s, different color every year) For her college graduation on Dec 16 she’ll get global entry.
They each have a birthday on either side of Christmas. No ideas for those.
Probably not, unless there is something new that I don’t know about.
My daughters had them (maybe the Fuji one) when they were trendy for teenagers. They were a fun gimmick for a short period, but the film tends to be pretty expensive and it’s another thing to carry.
Aside from serious photographers, most people find their phones to be the best and most convenient option.
I enjoy giving garden stuff especially if you need something “generic” but still something I’d like receiving–bird feeders/bird seed, bird bath, wind spinners, garden statues/gnome, garden solar lights.
I want a power screw driver–mine just gave out. A handy set of tools is great but it’s hard to find a good set of “basics”–I’ll have to assemble my own in a small tool box.
I feel your daughters’ pain! Have a late December birthday and then was dumb enough to get married four days before my birthday. Add Hanukkah (us) and Christmas (my extended fam) and my H gave up on ideas. Every couple years he comes up with one big item that covers everything, but mostly we do something together. He’s incredibly picky and I seldom hit a home run with gifts for him. I kind of gave up, too. We are both at peace with it and can enjoy celebrations now without the spectre of gifts hanging over our heads.
My sister bought a battery powered lawn mower and I’ll admit it’s great! Light-weight and easy to manuever. I was impressed (and so was my husband who is now considering one.)
I’d suggest a Canon Selphy Printer–usually great deals on them this time of year. Makes 4x6 prints (great quality) by bluetooth from your phone .There are some good free apps that let you do all sorts of creative things with your photos (including multiple photos to one print).
You don’t NEED apps and can do everything directly from the printer with many options.
