I’m asking my H to send me to a yoga retreat (my studio at home is sponsoring it) on the island of Dominica. It’s at a place called Jungle Bay.
I use both a drip machine and a Nespresso. The coffe maker is for the morning, the Nespresso for an afternoon treat. Add us to those who find it’s cheaper to go to Costco and buy a new machine.
From my husband I’m getting three sweaters which I ordered. One I’ve already worn twice. He doesn’t understand how I need three. From my kids I’ve asked for wireless headphones but I’ve told them don’t get me anything expensive.
I wasn’t sure where to put this but for a few years now, I’ve been thinking of “fixing” my teeth. I wore braces when I was younger but as I’ve (ahem) matured, my teeth have started to shift. As DH and I have been dealing with our parents and their dental issues, we started to seriously consider making the financial plunge of aligners.
It honestly is less about vanity than prevention of other issues. When I spoke with my dentist, he said a lot of his aligner patients are like me…someone who had braces but their teeth have shifted. Since the situation was only going to get worse, I figured I shouldn’t procrastinate any longer. I wanted to be able to enjoy the benefit of straight teeth and not have to deal with the “I should’ve done this years ago” feeling.
So DH and I are wearing aligners right now. It’s our gifts to ourselves. So far, so good.
Bromfiled2 - that yoga retreat sounds amazing! Be curious how it goes!
We purchased a Eufy vacuum as a shared gift. That DH loves using it? Priceless
Years ago my husband surprised me with an upright vacuum for Christmas. Friends balked, but I was delighted since it was mainly for him (a tall guy) to take over vacuuming. I called it “the gift that comes with parts AND labor”.
I got a dewalt miter saw (working on a new skill and furniture making) and have already used it. H (the chef in the family) got a vitaminix blender (using it tonight).
Got my present tonight-- D is home for the first time in 6 months!
Regarding the original thread question, I am difficult to shop for because I want few material objects. And the few things I do want, I usually buy for myself, rather than hope/wait for a gift at Christmas, and/or are too complex/conditional to explain on a gift list. The end result is I rarely get gifts that I enjoy or use. However, this year I received a new recliner chair that I am enjoying and using. I initially didn’t like or use the chair, then swapped it twice and made a variety of modifications to become a closer match to what am looking for in a chair.
Some things that especially interested me this holiday season and I purchased a few weeks ago during Black Friday include a DNA breed test for my dog, and a new phone with some key functionality that my old phone lacked. I submitted the DNA sample and should get results back in a week or two. I expect that I’ll find the results very interesting including breed info, DNA characteristics, health information, and links to relatives. After customizing my new phone with Nova Launcher and a unique widget that I’ve been discussing with designer, I am quite satisfied with the phone. It’s far superior to my old one by all metrics that are important to me, including the some key areas where I old phone was subpar.
I spent a summer in Dominica when I was in high school - it is so beautiful Back then nobody had really heard of it. I know more cruise ships go there now and have heard some parts are a bit more touristy but I cant imagine it is very built up. Will you get to do any touring? So many great spots to see - the Emerald Pool and Trafalger Falls were highlights. We lived up the mountain in Laudat but I never made the long hike to the Boiling Lake.
If you happen to see anybody selling coconut cheese (fudge using coconut milk) or cake (some ladies used to come in to the village with baskets full of warm, plain cake- super simple but so good) could you ask then for the recipes? Oh and be careful if you order mountian chicken, it’s actually a giant frog leg!
I have ordered a robot vacuum cleaner, 3 dresses, 2 cashmere sweaters, and 2 cashmere socks for myself while shopping for my family. I need to stop.
Keep going.
(I bought 2 pairs of Saysh shoes for myself. )
Can anyone comment on a Rumpl one person blanket? TIA
I did the unthinkable and bought a cordless vacuum. Yes. For me. I can’t deal with the dyson and stairs any longer.
I asked for gardening tools, my husband mispronounced the French word secateurs and the kids did spend some time searching, they finally found out it, that’s the gift. They added something to their vocabularies, lol.
For me? A new outdoor cooking area with a fire pit.
I saw a very cute lightweight jacket for sale at my yoga studio. Just perfect for walking here in early summer morning, also running in nicer weather or after yoga. I bought one and gave it to H to wrap. I’m very helpful that way.
I need for nothing, but I wouldn’t mind an Away Carry-On
I bought myself a gift last week. A college friend called and asked if I wanted to go to Mexico for a week in February. Why yes, yes I would! She has a time share week as a gift from her sister. I had enough miles to fly (had to pay the taxes) and will have to pay for food (not cheap I expect as it is a resort) but I’ll enjoy sitting on the beach for a week.
