Same here! We still give the “kids” gifts. Usually, we all chip and get each kid something. When kids get married or get a close significant we do couples gifts. We don’t go over the top, but usually gift cards or something like that.
I want Springsteen tickets at MSG - don’t want to go by myself, so it would need to be at minimum 2 tickets.
Circling back on the skyframe (electronic photos). Thinking about is as family gift for my sister’s gang. The device would be at sister’s house, but it would give ability I think for easy/remote posting of photos of the 5 grandkids and 2 grand pups… plus a recent lovely wedding. Normally I’d do nice gift cards for those grown kids/families and a little something for sis/husband. Crazy idea to switch it up?
We were given an Aura digital frame a couple of years ago and love it. One of my favorite gifts I’ve received. My sister loves hers too(also given to her as a gift).
But, we have never given separate gifts to the adult children of husband’s siblings, so i can’t speak to that part of your dilemma. There was never a precedent to give a separate gift at Christmas after they were adults(in either direction-us to them or them to us).
My sister, who never married, does give my adult kids very generous gifts at Christmas, and they give gifts to her as well. She has been very generous to them and we usually spend Christmas together. The gift giving between them will always continue. On the other hand, they have never given gifts at Christmas to husband’s siblings (and vice versa). Just a totally different dynamic.
So,maybe consider the whole gifting picture with your family (what it has been and what you would like to see going forward) before making the decision to stop gifting separately.
Some of the things I’ve asked for so far-from different people asking me for ideas-pistachios, Amazon gift card, jelly slices, and a gift certificate to Red Truck Bakery. I may still ask for fondue (have asked for that before and love that gift) and Hershey kisses(I laughed when somebody mentioned Hershey kisses earlier). I told one of my sons a couple of years ago when he was asking for ideas that I would like some Hershey kisses. He bought me a HUGE bag of them. But they eventually did all get eaten!
You know your family best. And the ages/stages of the kids.
But I’m thinking unless they are young children, they aren’t going to spend much time watching the digital frame display. It would probably be more “used” by your sis/husband???
It’s fine to switch things up! But I also bet those “kids” (did you say they are grown?) do enjoy the gift cards you’ve given in the past.
I have a small, gold signet style college ring and I wear it every day!
I’m giving ShawWife the most current iPad Pro 12.9" – expensive but I think she will really use it for her art.
I think my wife is getting me a Baerskin hoodie (The BÆRSkin Tactical Hoodie 2.0).
My gift to myself is a new low-end enterprise grade network for our house instead of a mesh wifi network. Ethernet cables are in/being put in during the renovation and I purchased wifi 6 components. Will be purchased by my company/hence tax deductible, but having fast internet access will be nice.
ShawD still needs to replenish all of her belongings after the fire on the moving truck. We will get her a down/down equivalent coat.
ShawSon usually says he does not want anything. But, maybe as a newly married man who has just moved (with new wife and old roommate and maybe a new roommate) into a 5 BR house, maybe he will want something. They are going rug and maybe couch shopping.
I’d like some really nice cheese knives (like some from this site: Cheese Knives | BOSKA Food Tools)
Still waiting to hear what our D would like. For S we’ve already made two purchases;
Arc’teryx shell jacket and a Dock for his Razer laptop.
While shopping for others, I find quite a few things I can’t live without.
Miracle product for me? Prewound bobbins for my sewing machine. My machine is very picky about bobbins and I have wasted a lot of thread because the tension winds wrong. Didn’t think the prewound ones would work but for $15 I thought I try them. Perfect. I can’t believe it. They are fantastic, and for $15 I got a gross. Yes 144 perfect bobbins. Should last me forever (as long as I like white).
And yes I get to use any gifts I buy for myself immediately and don’t have to wait for Christmas. That’s my rule.
@twoinanddone Are those Janome bobbins, by chance? And where did you find them?
We don’t really do gifts any more. My birthday, anniversary and Hanukkah are all the same week. We’ll go to a nice restaurant for our anniversary (it has an outdoor heated dining area). I don’t need much of anything except a contractor/handyman to come do the projects I can’t.
I found them on Amazon. There are 2 basic kinds, an A (which is mostly for professional machines) and L, which they said would work in most domestic machines. I have an Husqvarna and they are the little plastic ones, but I bought some replacements and they are finicky, especially with fancy stitches. Fancy like zigzags. I always use my original bobbins that came with my machine (now 27 years old) if I can but I think I only have 4 left. I really think it is a tension thing with them not working right.
Even with the L bobbins there were 2 types, one with the plastic bobbins and one with cardboard with no top. It was recommended not to get the cardboard.
Jenny on Missouri Star uses them but she uses the A type as she has some fancy machine. Since they are from Amazon, I figured if I didn’t like them I could return them. After only one day I love them. they are wound tight and the thread is thinner, so are supposed to last for hours longer.
H & I both want flannel LLBean PJs. Just sent D the code for 15% discount and info. She’s very happy.
I made a fresh pot of coffee for the painters at the house and they cracked the carafe. So DS #2 wanted to know what to get coffeepot!! I looked into replacing just the carafe, but the krups pot is so old the replacement aIl I could find was only in white an it was almost as much as getting the new pot. They got me a nespresso last year so this year its back to the standard pot. I am also in the throes of doing holiday cards, and I use the free return address labels that come in the mail, but most have just my name, not DH’s. So I’d also like a nice return address stamp gizmo. Tho I swear, no more holiday cards!
Interesting my husband just broke a carafe too, he went to Costco to buy a replacement. He also did the holiday cards, but he didn’t put return address because it’s all in my name, so he left it blank.
I have a nespresso and a traditional coffee maker also. I use both of them but sometimes you just want a good cup of coffee!
I’m getting a cordless vacuum cleaner, been wanting one for a long time.
Love our skylight frame - so excited for the days when new baby pix appear.
What would I like…a few weeks on a deserted island! Just me, a little cottage and a stack of books. Don’t think I’ll be getting my request.
I already got my big ticket items - a trip to Japan and a brand new phone to take better pictures. And we’ll see our kid. I did sent photos of earrings I liked at the local art center so I can have a present under the tree.
