what if I don't verify my income?

I was flagged by fafsa and also the school for income verification (for 17-18) but I was told I wouldn’t be eligible for financial aid so I didn’t bother. Today, now I see there’s a pending Pell grant for spring and summer. Would I lose those at the end of the year? I’m having trouble with the paperwork because in 2015 I was out of work but I reached the age necessary to have access to a small trust fund which I spent to live on that year. I believe I’m independent and am above the age necessary but I do rent a room from an extended family member.

Unfortunately, you will not receive any actual money, until you go through the verification process. Yes, if you are eligible for a Pell grant, you will not get the money applied to your account or refunded to you unless you submit the paperwork needed for the verification process.

Unless you:
are 24 year old,
married,
you have a child that you support at least 51% of the time,
you have served in the military
you were a ward of the court after age 13
you were in legal guardianship after age 13
both of your parents are deceased
you were an unaccompanied minor

you are not an independent student no matter what you think. Again, if you do not submit the forms, you will get no money
