What if my fees are due before the scholarship is confirmed?

We've been having issues with my FAFSA. I know the federal deadline has passed, but in my state there is still time to fill it out in order to get the state scholarships. I'm hoping we can get the issue solved- it's been giving both me and my mom trouble with our pins when we've tried to sign it. I'm going to try to get my mom to call customer service ASAP, but I'm worried that if we can't get it sorted out before my school fees are due (August 18th) that will be bad. If this happens, will I lose the scholarship? I'm confused because our state deadline isn't until September, but fees are due in 12 days. If the scholarship hasn't been confirmed yet by August 18th will I have to pay the fees on my own, and then will I be able to be refunded for the scholarship? What will I need to do/what will happen if we can't get this sorted out by August 18th?

oh boy, call FAFSA asap! I know what you mean , it’s all very confusing not to mention time consuming. Get in touch with the financial aid dept at your selected college immediately. They should tell you what to do . Good LUCK!

I talked to one representative, but I think the issue was with my mom’s pin. Now I just have to get her to sit down and finally figure this all out. Thanks for the advice :)

Actually the deadline for filing the 09/10 FAFSA is next June! You just need to call the FAFSA help line asap in order to allow your FA dept to process your awards! This does take some time so you may have to pay up front and get reimbursed if you don’t hurry. Definitely keep your school apprised of your situation and find out from them what they expect.

My mom says that I would get some kind of refund (it’s the best way I know to put it) since there would then be too much money in my account once the scholarship kicks in. I figure something could be straightened out, since the state deadline isn’t until Sept. 1st.

Thanks for the help! I’ll definitely try and call FAFSA tomorrow, and if the situation continues to play out I’ll get in touch with my school financial aid office.

I’m not sure what you mean by scholarship. Do you have any outside scholarship or are you calling any funds you might receive from the school based on your FAFSA a scholarship?
If you have to pay your school bill by 8/18 you will more than likely have to pay it and then you may receive some money back if you are offered a school grant or other funds.

We had a problem with my son’s PIN last year. It would say he did not have a PIN on file but when we tried to set up a new one it would say he couldn’t do a new one because he already had one! It was incredibly frustrating to deal with. The FAFSA helpline people tried to help but never could figure it out themselves. After a couple of days it all reset itself and he was able to get a new one. It could depend on what the problem with your Mom’s PIN is how quick you can get it sorted out.

Are you 100% sure you will get this ‘scholarship’? Our state does not have a deadline as such for the state need based grant but it runs out of money. We are recommended to file FAFSA by April as it is often all gone soon after that. If it is not an absolute guarantee are you still going to be able to afford the school if it does not come through? I would be concerned about starting at a school unless you are 100% sure you can pay for it. If you do have the money to pay for it then you should probably go ahead and pay now. if the grant comes through you will be refunded any excess.

^ that sounds kind of like the problem we’re having. My mom’s looking into it right now, though :)

I can only hope I’ll still get it. I’m pretty sure we filed late last year, and my brother ran into problems and has filed late before. Even if there’s a chance I won’t get it I have to try because it would be crazy not to. It’s the state “Hope” lottery scholarship and pretty much pays tuition completely. I got it last year without problem, and I still qualify. I’m afraid if I give up applying for it this semester I won’t be able to apply for it again, and I definitely need it.
