what if you can't see your decision yet for scholars

=) I'm not sure what the average EFC for emory is...but it seems from talking to most people on here than it is pretty high. part of this is deducted from emory's "rich kids" reputation, and partly from simply the amount of people here who say they are upper middle class/middle class. anyways, I know my parents would be expected to pay nearly all in full...

I'll be paying full price for my S. It's only numbers, anyway.......he's well worth it.

I'm sure the average EFC for Emory itself is well above $10k. However, I was throwing out a guess for the average EFC for an average college student in general ($10k if you're the only child would put you in a statistically middle range of incomes in America.)

The thing with Scholars money is that since the merit money is coming from Emory also, it is deducted dollar for dollar in grants. Basically, they subtract that merit money for your "need" and then calculate loans and work-study plus grant. I, along with a few others, emailed finaid to ask about this, and it seems to be the case.

On the bright side, I'm not even going to be paying what it'd cost me to live in the ATL area for 8-9 months a year. It's just when you add it up all through loans over 4 yrs that it seems so imposing.

As for whether it'd be altruistic to not apply if you aren't paying sticker price, I see it as if Emory isn't losing any money, because what would have been grant money, and is now replaced by merit aid is essentially kept in Emory's coffers to be used in some other way seen fit by Emory. Plus there's a bit of an advantage is class selection and other small perks if you get a Scholars scholarship that matter writing a 3pg essay potentially worth it.

but don't they get rid of your loans first before replacing grants?

Apparently not since the money is coming from Emory.

really? I'm surprised. can you give a link or some evidence? I'm just a bit surprised.

thanks for bringing that to attention

in the end, it doesn't affect me anyway

I PM'd you with an email I had received from emory.

However, I think if you received an outside scholarship they would try to reduce loans and self-help first, up to your COA minus EFC. But the whole process is a bit confusing. I know that in my EDI estimation, it appear as if they lopped the GA HOPE Scholarship (which is coming from the state of GA, not Emory) straight off of grant.
