What if you get a low overall GPA, but a high SAT, what colleges can I get into?

I'm currently a junior in high school, and my gpa so far hasn't been very good. I've tried to do good in semester 1 but I've gotten some of the harshest teachers ever this year, and it's not looking too good. So far, my gpa in high school is:

Freshman semester 1: 3.1
semester 2: 3.3

Sophomore semester 1: 2.9, 3.1 weighted
Semester 2: 2.6, 2.8 weighted

Junior semester 1: 2.9, with 1 D in AP Lit, 3.3 weighted

I really want to work hard on the SAT's so I can get an extraordinary score. What if by the end of high school I end up with a low overall GPA, lets say 2.8 and my SAT score is 2200+, will I have a shot at any college?

I was hoping to get into San Diego State (I live in san diego), but a friend said the average GPA is in the 3.5+ area. Would I have a shot at this college or any other college if I get a great SAT score, but low GPA? I don't want to go to a community college and transfer to a 4-year since i'll miss out the experience and also I won't be able to apply to internships.

Side question: If I have a D somewhere in my grades, will that destroy my chances or do most colleges just look at the GPA?

Public schools in California really weigh GPA heavily, but you should still consider the good CSU’s and maybe a UC if 3.3 is your UC GPA. Also, there is a west coast 3.0-3.3 GPA thread I can link.

So GPA is considered more heavily than SAT scores in california? Will a D in my transcripts kill my chances at any college?

If you want to stay in California, I can’t help you with any answer (because I don’t know the schools there). But if you have the desire and the resources to go out of state, there are a ton of colleges that would accept you with a 2.75 to 3.0 GPA and even a 2000 on the SAT. My son has stats in that general range. He’s mostly interested in the southeast (which you may have no interest in), and he’s applied to a lot of schools that he hasn’t heard from yet, but he’s already been accepted by College of Charleston, Samford, University of Alabama (Honors program even, based on SAT score), Ole Miss (with $10,000 in annual scholarship money, again based on the SAT score), and others. There will be MANY colleges, all over the country, that would want you. But the key for you will be, can you achieve that high SAT score you are banking on?? Good luck.

You really need to look hard at the UC website, or the California schools website.

"Will a D in my transcripts kill my chances at any college? "

For the publics, it depends on whether it’s an A-G. I don’t believe a D will satisfy the English requirement.
