What influenced where you want to go to school?

Good for you! Go get em tiger!

shibop shibop

UCB. the education and prestige play big factors, but other things play huge factors as well, such as the campus. The campus itself is so amazing, I just love it, I feel so at home there. Of all the schools Ive visited (UCB, UCSC, UCSD, UCSB, UCR). The greatest one (for me personally) is UCB. I honestly think that, if you don’t feel comfortable at a school, then you probably won’t do as well as you potentially could, so that’s why I consider the “feel” of the campus as a HUGE factor. The city plays a big factor also, as a transfer student I will probably be living in an apartment in the city of the school that I attend, so I have to feel comfortable in the city as well. Berkeley is great! There are so many things to do an it has such a diverse community! I think that it would be prey hard to get bored in a city such as Berkeley. Another factor for me is weather, I’m a bay area kid and I have adapted very well to the weather here, Id much rather not leave and enter a region with a very different climate, cuz it would make me very irritabe. I really don’t like the heat, I like nice, grey, cloudy skies! I also love the air up here, it feels clean and crisp (UCSB’s air is even better tho! UCSC has some pretty great air too) The air around UCR, and UCSD is pretty stale, I didn’t like that too much. The air around LA just felt gross. There are so many factors that play into my want for UCB…I LOVE UCB!!

well, I applied to UC Davis but I am not going there anymore, due to financial problems we’re having with our family regarding our house. I would’ve been fine with taking out the loan, but my mom is very strongly against me getting one. So I have to settle for Sac State, since I live in Elk Grove and don’t have to pay for room and board, and CSU tuition is cheaper.

I love UC Davis because people there are so chill, so friendly, and they seem like they LOVE being there (hence the Aggie Pack which I would’ve been a part of). Davis is no Berekley, but they don’t seem to care, they are happy with where they are at. I also love how the city of Davis revolves around the school. I love how Downtown Davis is filled with awesome restaurants, yogurt shops, coffee shops, movie theaters, etc.

I also love the city of Davis because my boyfriend lives and works there  he was the one who pushed me to apply to UC Davis because he saw I had potential, and I didn’t want to at first because I didn’t believe in myself, but after I applied I started realizing how super badly I wanted to be an Aggie!!

UC Davis (along with UCLA) are the only UC schools with a design program. UCLA’s program is wayyyy too difficult to get into, and emphasizes more interactive media design whereas Davis emphasizes more visual communication/graphic design.

I am not into Cal or LA like most other people here. I can’t see myself at any UC other than Davis or Santa Barbara (but unfortunately, they don’t have a design program otherwise I might have applied).

I mean, I am excited about going to Sac State…but it’s not the same. They have an awesome graphic design program, but I wish it was less of a commuter school and that the students had great school spirit. I also wish that the football team didn’t suck (though they beat UC Davis twice in a row in the Causeway Classic), maybe there would be better school spirit. Or that Sac State had a good reputation among other schools like Chico/Cal Poly/SDSU/Fresno/SJSU where so many people would want to apply there.

Sorry that this is long, just wanted to let this out!!

I really hope you tell all of this to your mom. Maybe she will have a change of heart!

You’ll live to regret letting your parents make decisions for you. But, because you’re an adult, you aren’t being forced to listen to your parents, so it seems you agree with mother’s reasoning.

Don’t let your parents decide, go with your heart.

UC Davis-

First and foremost I must say that I have never been to the campus nor have I been in the city of Davis itself but upon acceptance first thing I will do is take a trip up. Aside from that, I have gathered a lot of information about the school, the city, the weather, student body, Political Science department and most important the proximity to some great golf courses (kidding, well kinda lol) and all I hear is great things. I really feel it would be a great opportunity for me to move away, get a great education, be close to Sacramento for potential opportunities within the state govt, and just overall have a great college experience.

@EmpathyInAnarchy - at first she was totally supportive of the idea of me going there. but financial problems with our house started getting really ugly and really bad (I won’t get into detail because that is how personal it is) and we are fighting to keep our house even if it means having a really tight budget. And it’s a nice house too…and we aren’t low income, if anything, we are upper middle class, so I doubt that I am going to get any financial aid…and my GPA is not so hot (3.06) so I am probably not eligible for most scholarships let alone admission for Davis…but then again, who knows because people from the UC Davis forums that have really low stats have gotten accepted as freshmen, which we all know is harder to get in than as a transfer…

Weather was a big factor for me. I live in a place that gets pretty hot and I hate it.

Does anyone else feel strange watching the weather channel? Every time they say that it’s going to be ‘nice’ weather I think clouds! I always feel like they tricked me when they go on to say it will be sunny. Is sun really that widespread a value that the weather channel can just assume that when they say ‘nice’ weather, people will just understand?

I hate the day star. It causes skin cancer and I’m balding so I always have to wear a hat; 'tis harder to read outside because the pages get too bright; juggling is annoying as you can only really face one way the whole time; When it’s hot you get sweaty quicker and can’t concentrate because you’re more tired. I’m not a big fan of sun glasses, but I also don’t like having to squint all the time (my school has a lot of white buildings).

So, weather + best philosophy program i can manage + money considerations – my disgust for L.A. (beyond just the weather) = Berkeley!!!

^ Compelling stuff. I also think “nice” should be a synonym for “overcast.” I like clouds. I agree wholeheartedly.

UCLA - nice socal weather and good prestige
UCSD - nice socal weather and decent prestige
UCSB - hot chics
UCD - close to home and most of my high school friends go there

@aj why do you hate Sacramento?

I’m with you guys. I like crisp, cool days… Add in a little bit of fog and it’s perfect. :)

We’re weird people…

Who doesn’t like the ability to wear a sweatshirt whenever you want?!

Sounds like you guys would really prefer SF, across the bay, than Berkeley.

because sacramento is boring, too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, rains too much for me (raining right now), and ive been here my whole life. furthermore; downtown here sucks, there is no college scene here because my local college is a commuter school, and im just burnt out on the surroundings.

i will however miss the river during the summer. damn is it fun to float down the river with a case of beer and party behind sac state at the mud islands.

Because of my unfinished business. That was the first thing that came to mind. My first experience at UCSD was dating chicks from there and being “that guy”. You know, all you young guys in college, who are upset because you meet a cute girl and she’s dating some jerk who isn’t even going to school and you wonder, “Why is she with that guy?” Well, I was that guy.

In all seriousness, when I first saw UCSD, I thought of how different it was as a campus. Everything just felt “smarter”. The environment, the monuments, the structure, the location, the people… It just felt like a “smarter” school. When I finally decided to change my major to engineering, the first thing I asked my counselor was, “What schools are good for this?” And he said, “MIT… Georgia Tech… University of Texas. But UC schools are probably the best for you because they’re cheaper than out of state and they’re very good engineering schools.”

So, I took a tour to UCLA to see how I liked it because a lot of people want to go there. In a drastic difference from what almost everyone else thinks, I was underwhelmed by UCLA. I went on one tour there, and also went on a different time to hang out with a student from there. This student was popular too, so I got to experience a privileged social experience there. I just did NOT dig it.

However, when I took the tour to UCSD, almost everything I experienced made me want to be there even more. The snake path leading to the library from the Engineering school. The design of the library. Dr. Seuss’s desk. The price center. The six undergraduate colleges. I just felt like I belonged there.

It helps that UCSD is ranked #4 in the COUNTRY for public schools in my major. They’re #1 in the UC’s, higher than UCLA and UC Berkeley and even ranked higher than Stanford for my major. (Bioengineering)

I also want to add that Sac State has a marketing minor (and UC Davis doesn’t), and it’s almost always recommended for graphic design majors to minor in some type of business, especially marketing, because companies also want to see potential designers have some sort of business skills…it gives them over the edge. If I had gone to Davis, I would’ve minored in Art Studio, which is still good since it’s still art/design related, but what I really need are those business/marketing skills…and a former co worker told me that Sac State’s graphic design program is better if you are interested in commercial art (which is what I kinda lean towards anyway) whereas Davis’s design program is more of a fine arts thing

@ajdavidson07 - I only like the weather here in Sac during the fall, when the leaves get a gorgeous orange/brown/red color. It’s pretty in the spring time too, but my allergies won’t budge (but luckily they aren’t as bad this year compared to the past few years)…and yeah, it really sucks that Sac State is a total commuter school with little school spirit and college life…

I’ve actually been thinking about this quite a bit. I know I have to get far enough away from my parents so that it would be impossible for them to control or attempt to control any aspect of my life. Its not the way I wish things were but theres not really anything I can do about it. I’d actually have normally loved to go to UCLA, if my parents didn’t live 20 miles away and go to the church next door. This is the main reason my nnumber 1 choice is Berkeley. if you don’t have strict controlling parents there is no way you can understand this, but it has to be done.

Other than that I feel Berkeley would be the best school for me as I love thinking about and fighting my own belief system, I’m not sure I’ll find people that actually like doing that anyplace but Berkeley. I’d better get in there haha if I dont my backup is Davis.
