What is a good major for premed?

I've heard that it doesn't matter what major you take, but would medical schools care if I took a non-science related major such as software engineering? I have an interest in computer programming but I would like to become a doctor. Also, if I don't make it into med school can I still pursue science related professions with the required pre-med courses?

No, med schools won’t care what you major in as long as you take the pre-requisite courses and get good MCAT scores. In fact, it’d be better for you to major in a non-science field with good job prospects in case you decide not to go Med. school or don’t get in. Besides, science majors are a dime a dozen when it comes to applicants. Do something outside the box. With the exception of Mathematics, Geology(currently in a boom cycle), and certain engineering fields, Science majors have terrible job prospects, especially at the Bachelor’s level.

Nope. Not at all, as long as if you do well in your premed requirement courses. It also wouldn’t hurt to take a couple harder science courses. Have you ever considered majoring in bioinformatics?

If you major in bio or chem, you may end up as a lab technician, who don’t make much money. Becoming a professor in biology or chemistry is harder than getting into medical school. People who work at biotech firms generally make a reasonable living though, but you first you would need a graduate degree and a fairly good resume.

If you major is software engineering who takes the required premed courses, you are probably still qualified as a lab technician as long as you conduct research college. I don’t see why you would want to be a technician though.
