A good major for med school/and a good fall back job

I’m trying to pick a good major to get into pre med school and also one that can be considered as a checkpoint once i get a bachelors degree; or might even be considered as a fall back job if I have a hard time getting into med school. I’m a first gen student so my parents don’t know much about college, and college advisers don’t seem to help much unless its about which classes you should take. This is my first year by the way and I want to make a strong start. I’d really appreciate the recommendations.

The answer to this question largely depends on your interests.

Remember: Pre-med is not a major. It is a set of classes that are required by most medical schools including introductory bio, chemistry, physics, ochem, calculus, psychology, biochem, genetics, etc. Typically this cluster of classes is mostly covered by a biology major, hence many pre-med students are bio majors. Biology, though typically easier than its other biological science counterparts, can be hard to find a career in if your med school plans don’t pan out as it is too general. Most employers prefer a more specialized degree than bio, like microbio, molecular bio, biochem, genetics, etc. If you enjoy biological sciences, consider majoring in one of these majors.

As long as you have taken (and succeeded in) the aforementioned classes you can get into medical school - major does not matter. You can major in English or Sociology or whatever. The key is to follow your interests and make sure that you pick a degree you can find a job in if medical school doesn’t work out.

Thanks a lot guys I have talked to many people and have decided to major in electrical engineer. I also know that there will be some bio and other classes i will have to take separately since they are not included in the major, but like they say no pain no gain. THANKS!!!
