I know theyre some form of pamphlets but are they required for all classes? If not then how do we know which class requires them?

They are not pamphlets, they are technically books. You find out if you class requires a reader on the first few days of class. You buy the reader at the indicating copy store. Some readers are really cheap ($5-10), some are expensive (>$30)

heres a very useful tip. dont buy a reader for a class until you are sure you wont drop it because some of the copy stores like copy central on bancroft wont give refunds

If you want to save money, you can usually find the articles online using the UCB’s library subscriptions. It’s very easy once you learn how to do it.

Of course, I’ve had a reader assigned probably for every class I’ve taken at Berkeley and I bought one. I never opened it. What a waste of $70.

sometimes readers are reused year after year

you can find ridiculously cheap ones on comegetused.com

but for some classes like PS2 I took last semester, all the reading came from the reader so it definitely wasn’t a waste
