Hey Guys,
I'm new to College Confidential.
I have some qustions for future freshman and current students. First, has anyone taken African American Studies 27ac (minorities and struggle)? If you have, do you guys know what the required books/novels are? The Cal store does not have them online.

Second question: when should I buy course readers like for Astro C10 and the lab manual for Chem 1a? Also, can I buy the readers at a cheaper price than the Cal student store? For examle, can i get a reader at Copy Central or Odin readers for cheaper or are all the readers the same price?

Third: I was awarded a $5,000 outside scholarship and it arrived at Cal 2 days ago(i got an email) how do scholatships work? Do i pay with the miney or do they deduct $5,000 from CARS? Finally when are CARS bills updated?

Thanks a lot

The readers are often something you buy direct from the copy shops. The professors will tell you how to get the readers as they are often not ready in advance.

Report the scholarship, they will send it to school. In turn, the school might reduce some from your loan?

Chem 1A, the lab manual is bought from Copy shop for 15 or so. It’s pretty cheap. You don’t need it for your first lab, but you will start using it 2nd lab in discussion. Lab manual is different, that you buy at the Cal Student store or Ned’s. You will need it second lab as well.

Readers - Professors pick one copy shop to have the readers made at, so they tell you where to get them. You should get them ASAP! Humanities professors test from lecture and from the reader, rarely from the textbook.

AfAm27ac - I haven’t (was a Cognitive Science major), but if the texts aren’t listed, the student store will have a list and you can note them and then buy them online. Or there might only be a reader :)

Best of luck!

thank you everyone for responding my question!
