He's the guy on the Simpsons staff that tells writers how far they can go when parodying or ridiculing something without infringing on copyrights.

Entertainment law is a diverse field of law that integrates contracts and intellectual property law. Every book, movie script, or television show must grapple with these legal issues.

The entertainment industry poses many potential legal complications. Consulting with an attorney prior to negotiating any formal contracts or copyright privileges is always a wise thing to do. Speaking with the proper entertainment lawyer will inform you of your rights in the entertainment industry and protect your interests.

Many non-entertainment lawyers and students picture the practice of entertainment law as an exciting way to mix with the rich and the famous while earning a huge income. It is seen as an easy road to fortune, glamorous parties, gala events, and national recognition - if you can just get that first break. However, this is not the reality of the practice. Similar to any other specialty of law, entertainment lawyers work long hours and work hard.

Lawyers practicing entertainment law are not typically trained to be entertainment lawyers in law school. There is no substantive area of law individually identified as "entertainment law." However, as law schools adapt to the changing market place for potential students, more and more law schools have developed courses that provide a background in the various technical specialties involved in an entertainment practice. Thus, entertainment lawyers usually develop expertise in one or more legal areas, such as copyright, contracts, trademark, labor, worker's compensation, tax, business organizations, bankruptcy, family, immigration, or criminal law.

There was a course in entertainment law at Boalt when I was there, taught by the current dean of Vanderbuilt's law school. I attended the course the first two days before deciding to take something else. It seemed to be a survey of the types of clauses that are heavily negotiated in entertainment agreements.

The contractual issue that convinced me to switch to another course was whether Ethel Merman or Jimmy Durante was going to get top billing in a Broadway play they were doing together. Their contracts resolved the issue by providing that their names were to appear in an X-pattern, and that half of the posters would show Merman's name rising from left to right, and the other half would show Durante's name rising from left to right.

I concluded at that moment that my life might be better spent trying to solve a different set of problems.

Yeah, but think about all the autographed glossy photos you could have had!

Concernddad,

I try not to torture myself thinking about them. I count the lost glossies among my biggest regrets. I've had a few of them, but then again, too few to mention.
