The title pretty much says it all - which is better Amherst or Williams?

They're both excellent schools.
I wouldn't say one is that much better than the other.
But personally, I prefer Amherst.

Toss up...though I like Williams better. ;)

AMHERST!!!! no doubt they ahve fatzos

1)harvard
2)williams

Better in what way? Better location? It's a toss up; Williamstown is physically beautiful and exceedingly boring. Amherst is lovely and more lively. Better academics? Impossible to say, they both have their strengths. Better football? Williams. Better US News ranking? Williams currently, but they change it up every few years so people keep buying the publication. Better academic schedule? I prefer the Interterm options at Amherst (I would hate to have to spend winter in Williamstown - Amherst gave me a fellowship to travel during interterm) but again, many love the structure of Williams' J-term. Better course selections? Amherst, easily, if you include the breadth of the 5-college consortium. Better looking students? Why, Amherst of course! ;)

You can't go wrong with either, and no graduate school admissions officers will look at either school more highly than the other (excepting those with personal biases, like alumni). Both are fantastic schools, and neither is better than the other.

My final choice was between Amherst and Williams (a heartbreaking choice - I absolutely loved them both). Don't waste your time wondering which is better, they're more alike than different.

lame - u should ahve given ur final choice - id say that the college consortium is far above the best - adn morea ttractive girls - u ahev me sold!

I gave my final choice in that post. Read more carefully next time.

ahh Amherst - good choice

different strokes for different folks.

lol - thsi si supposed tobe aheated deabte

I think most people realize that when it comes down to it they are both fantastic schools, among the best in the nation, and really it's about fit and personal preference. Or hopefully they realize. It's really just about at which you feel more comfortable...I don't know if you could really go wrong with either otherwise.

pshh heated debate..let's all be friends ;)

this is his brother - Willimas is by far the best. It has better rescouces and a school that sends undergrads to better grad schools

Oh, by the way unregistered, I just realized after posting my 2 cents that I pretty much just repeated a lot of what you said, exact phrases even. I'm sorry! Completely unintentional. I had skimmed over your responses an hour or so ago and I guess they were subconsciously in my mind as I was typing a response.

Oh well, imitation is the highest form of flattery right?

But yeah. Williams and Amherst..both ridiculously good schools.

I think that willaims campus is ugly

This year Williams is ranked number one, right above Amherst but Amherst, Swarthmore, and Williams are always fighting for that number one spot.

Wow- I am just appalled at MKs great insight. This is the exact case where the CC can be such a wonderful source of information

Getting back to the subject :) : Both are wonderful schools and well recognized. Let me add Swarthmore to the list and say AWS is as good as other ivies (except HYP, perhaps). One would get awesome educations from AWS.

W middle of nowhere, top academics with many jocks & awesome study aboard program in England
A - Writer/Poets Haven, school for more refined, urbanites
S - school for quirky/smart students, well recognized for its excellent science programs

We were at a wedding in Amherst this past summer and stayed there in town. We walked around the campus and my husband (who went to Harvard) said, "this looks like a nice little prep school". I could have killed him. University grads don't always understand the value of LACs.

You'd get a great education at either college......a win win situation. Both are steeped in their own unique history and tradition, and are challenging.

Don't make a decision on Williams vs Amherst based on what others think is better because the academic reputation side is so even.
