What is Columbia like?

I'm currently a junior in high school and am contemplating whether or not I should apply early to Columbia this fall. I visited there last Spring on a school trip, and I fell in love with the campus and the fact that it is in NYC. Obviously, it's a great school with great academics, but I want to know what everything else is like. I'm NOT someone who likes to study all day; I enjoy being able to study and get good grades when I need to and hanging out with my friends and having a social life. So the college I go to definitely needs to have both aspects.

First, are the dorms really that bad? I've heard a lot about how terrible they are, but most college dormitories are, so are they any worse? Also from what I've read, it looks like there isn't much of a campus social life. I love that it is in the city, which is why I won't be missing out on fun off campus, but I also want to know if there are on campus activities and parties that I would be able to attend.

I'm one of those people that has to be in the mood to go out with friends or just stay in the dorm with a few people. Sometimes I like to hang out with a small group of friends, and other times, I like to party...

Just let me know how you think I would do at Columbia. The social life of Columbia is kind of the only thing holding me back from applying ED b/c I don't want to be stuck at a prestigious university that I can't have fun at.

And before you start criticizing me for worrying about the "social scene" and not the academics, I'm a great student with great grades and extracurriculars. I'm not saying I will get in, but I'm hoping I have a chance. I just want to know if CU would be right for me.

Thanks in advance!
