What is good acting?

I thought this piece was pretty incredible – and since it’s nice to have distractions when you are waiting and worrying, I’m sharing with you.

Excellent! One of his points is that overacting doesn’t automatically equal good acting and it’s true that sometimes those who are lauded are big scenery-chewers. I think it’s good to keep in mind that his examples are all film performances and there are differences between acting for the stage vs. the screen. I sat in the third row for M Butterfly and was covered in spit from John Lithgow. He’s definitely known as someone who acts larger-than-life in many roles, but the emoting in that show was definitely helpful for the people sitting in the balcony to get the same feel for the actors that the people sitting in the orchestra had.

I’ve always liked Meryl Streep as an actress. I recently watched her in Julie and Julia. The first movie I remember her from was Kramer vs Kramer. It seems she can be cast into any role, flawlessly pull off any dialect and still come across as authentic and real. One commonality I began to notice in all the parts she plays is how she uses her eyes and her body. What she does is very subtle yet this is why it makes her so believable. An example would be at A Devil Wears Prada. It’s those cutting eyes looking over her glasses with her pursed lips “That’s all” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2f2Kqt_KcE
