What is Harvard's "Term-Time Work Expectation"?

I was admitted to Harvard EA and my family and I have applied for financial aid, however it sadly seems like we didn’t get any. The my.harvard.edu Financial Services award letter says “you do not qualify for our need-based scholarship assistance (assuming scholarship assistance=financial aid)”

However, on the same page it says that the Financial Aid Office has a $3000 “Term-Time Work Expectation.”
Is this like a work-study program? And why is there a work expectation when I wasn’t offered any aid (other than a “Federal Direct Unsubsidized loan”)?

^^Ask Harvard.

What is your parents’ AGI?

You’re expected to work during the school year. If you can’t do that it can be replaced with an education loan of some kind.

I was going to write a fuller explanation but Harvard already has one. You don’t have to work if your family will pay that portion of your expenses instead. But often a p/t job is beneficial. My dd did paid work helping profs.

@BrownParent Thanks for the reply, it helped clear it up, but is the term-time work required of all students?

No one has to work. But it certainly is beneficial to do so. You get some work experience, plus some money to use for your expenses.

Right, if you have enough money for your expenses then you don’t need a job or you can take a student loan. If you want the extra money or experience then you look for something. Not required.
