Hey guys, recently I got accepted to Harvard with a financial aid package. In the package, they've listed that I will be paying a component of my tuition through a term time job. Do I need to apply for this job, or is it understood that I will be offered one, since its listed in my aid package? Also, there are quite a few jobs that I can apply for right now, however since I will be doing that job listed in my aid package, I don't know if I'm allowed to apply for these other ones or not. It would be really nice if someone current students can clear up this situation. Thank you :)

it means when you applied you put down that you wouldnt mind working some hours a week during the year. and no you dont have to work, and you dont have a job. you can take a loan or use more of your own money.

Term time employment is a bit confusing for freshman and their parents. For purposes of evaluating how much money is owed the university, term time jobs should be ignored. Here’s why:

When your fall term bill arrives on July 8th, you (or your parents) will owe Harvard the money allocated from that term time job. Then, in September, you may apply for any number of jobs available either on or off campus. As you work throughout the semester, you will hopefully receive paychecks that equal or exceed the term time money previously paid in July.

As reptil said, you are not required to work, but may opt to do so. If there is a job listed currently at the Harvard Student Employment Office that you would like to apply for, you should go for it.
Does anyone know what are the more ‘exotic’ or ‘prestigious’ jobs one can get, or has got, as a term-time job?

By this I mean, I know about jobs like working in the library, laundry etc, but just wanted to know what other jobs people have gotten.

Thanks :)

Guys, it would be really nice if you could also tell what the usual per hour pay range is. The max, the min, and the average hourly pay. Thanks a lot.

If you log-in with your HUID to the above site, you can view the current jobs available and their hourly pay.

Yeah I did that gibby, thanks a lot for the cite, I’ve narrowed down some choices as well I just wanted to know the general pay range, so I can apply to the right ones I’m an incoming freshmen, so the good ones prob won’t be available for me.

Most basic jobs I’ve seen are $11-12 / hr. If you bring some kind of skill to the table, like translating documents for the German department or doing high-level research in some field, it could get up to $20 / hr.

@Gibby, or any other current student.

How does that work if you have enough outside scholarships to offset the term time job responsibilities and student contribution?

Do my parents still have to pay the portion of the award labeled as “term-time job”? That would be a problem for me…

Outside scholarship $$$ is first applied against term-time employment, then student contribution, and finally against any Harvard scholarships. So, if your outside awards exceed the allotted term time employment contribution, your parents will not have to pay that money upfront. If you have a large outside award, it could offset both term-time employment and student contribution.
