What is/how to get "research"....?

Ok so this might be a noob question but what is "research" exactly? People say here and there that they had 'research' over the summer with some prof. at certain colleges and institutions, but i have no idea what they are talking about. How do these 'research' jobs work? What kinds of things do you do in them? Also, how do you get one of these 'research' positions? How helpful are they in your college apps?

Thanx in advance to all who reply =)

uh....wanna help me out somebody?

First of all, you get interested in some field. Then, you research a bit on your own. Then, you contact a professor at a college and try to ask if he/she would be willing to partake in a project.

Research in a particular field is finding something new in the field or inventing something new. There are many forms of research.

My D did research at a major university her entire senior year and the summer following her senior year. She contacted a prof in the dept of her interest during the spring of her junior year. After an interview, she was given a research position helping out a postdoc in some very cutting edge, high tech research. She was very lucky in that she wasn't a "paper pusher" or doing only drudge work. Once she was trained, she was set loose in the lab to do her work. I don't know if this was helpful in getting her into the college of her choice. I am sure it helped her to get into the university (a top twenty) where she did the research because her prof really wanted her to continue. I think, however, there are enough students who do research that it probably wasn't one of the main reasons she was accepted at the college she currently attends. But, in the world of admissions, who knows?!

im thinking of history research...kinda dull..? hehe well i love history and wouldn't mind spending hours after hours pouring through books and papers so i am pretty sure i wanna do this

The thing is, the only time i can do this is during summer and maybe my senior year (im currently a junior)......i know this may sound too far off in the future, but i just want to know the necessary things so i can get a research position during summer and maybe beyond. How should i go about doing this?

I would just email a few professors from a local college, or see if you have any connections through people you know already. The worst thing that can happen is you get turned down or ignored...

OOK......so 'research' is.....could someone define the whole concept.......? ahhhhh im such an ignorant idiot

Yep, the entire faculty of the Princeton Environmental Institute ignored me. :)

Next stop: Rutgers University!

hm bumppidty bump

Yeh... I didn't know you had to ask people to participate in researches...
I thought the shcools kinda organized them for you and you just needed to apply..

Contact principal investigators in whatever field you want to research very soon. If you have not had a lot of lab experience (for those in science research), it may be difficult.. took dozens of emails and quite a few calls... If you definitely want to do research over the summer, start soon. There are a lot of forums about research...
There are a lot of types of research, and you can iron out the details of what you want to do and what your supervisor wants you to do.
Basically, you need to take the initative.
