That is an on going question whether TO puts certain applicants at a disadvantage for certain schools (especially very selective ones). The conventional thinking is that if the score puts the applicant above the median scores of existing students as found in the CDS, submitting scores will not hurt and may help.
Also, as was mentioned in a previous thread, if his grades put him in the top 9% of California seniors, then he is pretty-much guaranteed admissions to UC Merced even without applying ā but not necessarily in his first choice major, if that major is impacted. He could also apply to UC Merced directly in order to get his first choice major.

Thank you!
Youāre welcome. The website says that students in the top 9% will be offered āa guaranteed space at a UC campus, if space is available.ā
Although this sounds like they will get a choice among the UC campuses, what it means in reality is that they will be offered a spot at UC Merced, if they apply to one or more UCs and are not accepted at any of the UCs that they applied to.
Yes, my son told me that, but he said heād rather go to Cal poly than UCM as it is more closer.
That sounds good ā I didnāt see Cal Poly on the list you provided.
Please note that many many schools have gotten much more competitive than you may remember from your older son four years ago. He should consider applying to several of the Cal States, not just Cal Poly, to maximize his chances.
I am assuming you are referring to Cal Poly SLO? There is a new Cal Poly Humboldt, and there is also Cal Poly Pomona. Both of them are less competitive than SLO.
He is not planning to apply Cal Poly or Cal state universities originally, but I will persuade him to add some for safe, I canāt imagine how hard it is nowš
I agree with the other comments on retaking the SAT one more time given the selectivity of some of schools you are targeting. I also think the December 3rd test date will be too late to have an impact on Brown ED as decisions will already have been made before the school sees the scores.
There is a November 5th SAT that is still showing as open for late registration until October 25th on the College Boardās website, assuming you can find an open location that works for your son. I would suggest he takes that if he wants his score to be considered in the ED round.
Good luck!
Agree ā there is a lot of debate on this point, and we probably do not want to invite that debate here.
Look at it this way: if a school is offering the option to submit information or data to reinforce your case for admission, and you have information or data to support your case, try to use that option.
I am afraid that he has no any preparation for Nov Test, will get lower scoreā¦
That is a possibility ā 2 1/2 weeks of prep is admittedly not optimal. But thatās the time that he has. The only way to know is for your son to take some practice tests from past exams, see where he is ending up, and then make a call at the last minute on whether to sit for the actual exam. Thereās no problem with registering for the SAT and then not showing up on exam day (other than the test fee and prep time that could have been spent elsewhere).
So my suggestion would be to register by October 25th, try some practice, and then see where your son is landing. December 3rd will unfortunately be too late for ED.
Honestly, even the November 5 test date may be too late ā Brownās FAQ says that one needs to take the test by October to ensure score consideration. Here: Test Optional | Undergraduate Admission | Brown University. But if he gets a good result he will be in the best possible position for the regular round.
Brown says that they will let the student use āScoreChoiceā which means that the student can choose which SAT test date scores they send to the school. So if he does worse, he can choose not to send the worse scores to Brown.
Butā¦some other schools on his list may not allow āScoreChoiceā and then he would have to send all the test results to them if/when he applies there. You would have to check each schoolās policy individually.

Has he thought about using his ED opportunity to ED to one of the schools on his list that isnāt Brown, and that is somewhat less selective and where he has a better chance if he chooses to ED there instead? Iām not trying to be pessimistic, but ED rates at most colleges are higher than regular rates because recruited athletes, children of big donors, and students with other āhooksā apply ED and that drives up the acceptance rate ā but for these schools it doesnāt mean that an unhooked applicant has a significantly better acceptance rate in ED over RD. Tufts, for instance, might be a better option for ED.
Hi, I donāt have any information about your students chances but if heās serious about grad/dental school you should really look into very budget friendly options as well. Many of the schools in the WUE could come in under budget and are an easier admit. Also chasing merit at U of New Mexico or Arizona are more options. He can get into dental school from most universities. Iām certain your student will be amazing at any school lucky enough to him. Good luck!
