What is NYU like as a student?

I visited the school and definitely liked it...although it wasn't as personal as USC, which I also visited, it seemed pretty cool. Being that NYU doesn't have a true sports program I was curious as to what students do with their free time, and more specifically activities that really pull the student body together (like what football is to USC). I would think that plays and theatre and such are big, but I'm really not into that kind of stuff.

I’m a freshman currently coming off my first semester. I came from an all girl’s high school with only 100 girls in each grade and intense school spirit. NYU is the complete opposite and I’m totally cool with it.

There’s really nothing here that pulls the school together. There is no sense of unity and pretty much no school spirit. If this bothers you I would not consider going, because if you crave unity you will most likely have a horrible experience. In our free time my friends and I wander around the city or we hang in our dorm’s lounge or the hallway on our floor with other people from our building.

Your sense of unity comes from your friends and the people you live with. If you’re planning on commuting I’m not sure how that will work for you, but for me my sense of community comes from the people who live on the same floor in my dorm building. NYU is great because it really gives you your own sense of identity, instead of allowing you to ally yourself with thousands of other people because you share a college name. I’ve made great friends here and I’ve found people to be friendly, but we certainly don’t bond over the fact that we attend NYU.

You’ll have to decide what’s best for you. If you want school spirit, I’d definitely choose something else. There are really no clubs here that are so big that they bind everyone together. Sure you can find your niche and create a sense of unity with the people there, but it will still only be club spirit and not school spirit.
