What is preferred admission?

I’m applying EA for engineering, and I’m wondering what a preferred admission for Ross school of business is.

It means that you apply to Ross (along with Engineering) via the Common App. If you get admitted to Engineering, then your application is passed along to Ross for additional review. If you get into Ross it’s considered “preferred admission” because you were admitted during the high school admissions process. Some students will apply to Ross after they arrive at Michigan, at the end of their freshman year. Regardless of which process you use (preferred or applying during freshman year), Ross is a three-year program that starts sophomore year. You can read about it here.

@brantly So it’s like a dual-degree program in engineering and business?

No. That’s not the definition of preferred admission.

Preferred admission is a process. It means that you applied and got accepted while still in high school—instead of applying and getting accepted at the end of your freshman year of college. Preferred admission is mutually exclusive from whether you choose to do a dual degree or not. You can do a dual degree if you are accepted through preferred admission. You can do a dual degree if you are accepted at end of your freshman year. Or you don’t have to do a dual degree at all.

But for Ross to even consider your application—whether during the preferred admission cycle or freshman-year admission cycle—you have to have been accepted to a “home” school first. It can be engineering, LSA, or others. When you start the Ross program sophomore year, you can choose to continue with your home school IN ADDITION to Ross to get a dual degree (will typically take five years)—OR you can drop your home school and just get a BBA from Ross.

@brantly So just wanted to confirm. My D was admitted to Stamps Art and Design and applied preferred admission to School of Information. So she is guaranteed into UMSI after freshmen and can graduate with BS degree at end of four years?!

@dspak77 I don’t know anything about Stamps Art and Design or about School of Information. This thread was about preferred admission to the Ross School of Business. But I found this on the website.

@brantly Thanks for your reply. I read the website and looks like my D is “guaranteed a place in BSI program” but will double check with an admission officer.
