What is "Southern"?

Students often say that they don't apply to schools like Vanderbilt because they are too "southern."

What is your definition of southern and what makes it unappealing (or appealing) to you?

*I also posted this in the College Search and Selection page, but I'm curious to see how the responses differ.

"Southern" generally means hot women cooking kick@$$ food.

I know it when I see it.

Stop trying to class up the place with thoughtful posts, slip.

We are not apologists.

Quoting, "The place where all the black people are lazy and all the white people are just as lazy, but the white people are all mad at the black people for being so lazy."

I think there is a big difference between the academic schools (Duke, Vandy, etc) and the other southern schools. As a northerner, I doubt I'd fit in at Ole Miss, Auburn, etc. but the elite schools have more geographic diversity.

VUAlum, I'm not trying to be an apologist; I genuinely do not understand what people mean when they negatively refer to a school as "southern." Just trying to edumacate myself, that's all ;)

Slip, you are my favorite poster hands down; I was just yanking your chain. I do think there is a little bit of a reflex action that some southern people and some Vandy people seem to take when this topic rears its head. Some over eagerness to prove we all don't live in the big house on the plantation.

college2322 nailed it RE: college campuses and southern. If you want to feel that, take a road trip to Ole Miss or even Sewanee. The Vandy bubble does isolate much of the potential true southern influence.

Once you venture off campus and downtown there is a more grass roots souther style to the Vandy experience. On-campus the semi-laidback attitude on weekends (B/C during the week classes and otehr stuff prevails) is another facet of what I deem southern lifestyle.

i live in nashville and have found there are many different types of "southern." Vanderbilt southern is on the "southern belle" side. You will see girls who dress up for class and football games and always have on their pearls. Very clean cut guys. Traditions like steeplechase and such. Everyone is generally friendly to everyone. But it's not overwhelmingly southern and it's definitely not southern like "hick." You will find all sorts of people there, but overall the feel is very different from the north.

haha I live in Auburn, and am offended that you (college2332) put us in the same category as Ole Miss. We consider Auburn an oasis (like Vandy's bubble--VUAlum) in Alabama. I think the biggest difference between the north and the south is that we have more trees...
