What is the best college for a major in film production?

I have no restricting factors at this moment, just HAS to have a major in film production.

What is that best? Or the top schools?

ideally, NYU’s Film School…but it’s way overpriced and they don’t have great financial aid

UCLA Film School is also great because of the location…close to Hollywood, well ranked, etc.

In addition to NYU, also consider USC (some guy name Lucas gave them $175 mill – may the force be with them) and Chapman-Dodge.

USC
CalArts
Chapman
Emerson

How do these schools rank for film?

For quality of the program what would be the best school though? Where will I get a lot of editing hands-on? (I love the editing aspect the most!)

I would consider UCLA if I were from California, you could probably get more financial aid and everything. Plus the school’s location also counts as a plus.
NYU’s film school I think, ideally is the best. But they ARE really not so great on FA. Last year a guy from our school got accepted, but was offered no FA.
I don’t know about USC’s FA, but I heard that they have a quite good film program also.

Be aware that you can’t be admitted directly to UCLA’s program as an undergrad, but must apply after GEs – and compete against the hordes for admission to the major. It’s a big downside to UCLA (and not that easy to discern from the UCLA website).

At other SoCal programs (USC, Chapman-Dodge, LMU) you enter with your major as a freshman, with the certainty that you can pursue your chosen area.

Gladiatorbird, is NYU like that?

I’m pretty sure you get admitted into Tisch directly.

If anyone has information like this, or even an opinion, please state so:
If i want to go a great film school that puts emphasis on editing, and will get me great connections, which school would that be?

Not sure about NYU, but I think it’s direct admission. UCLA is uniquely troublesome in this regard.
USC has a great program, but it’s expensive and FA is so-so. Chapman-Dodge and LMU are known for generous merit and financial aid.
Threads here are chock-full of great info on all the film programs. Check them out in Visual Arts forum.

Right now, Chapman-Dodge is the number one choice for me even know it’s not as well known…hm…

Are you a senior? Financial need, grades and scores, etc. You will get more input at visual arts forum. All the schools you mention are expensive, and their film production programs are highly competitive for admission, some extremely so. More info from you would improve advice.

Ditto. You might want to look at CSU Long Beach’s Dept of Electronic Media Arts. They have a production track that sounds like what you are seeking (perhaps as a transfer if you are already a senior).

I am a freshman in high school…i am looking at what i want in the future…

If you are a freshman then I highly advise you not to think about this for the next 2.5 years. By that time, you may not even be remotely interested in film. Trust me, your hopes and aspirations will change drastically before you apply to college.

Good for you - starting early! Great info for you on the “advice” thread at the top of this forum.

I wouldn’t say don’t think about it, there are lot’s of meaningful things you can do involving preparation for film school that will transfer over to other fields if you change your mind. Admission to many schools is influenced by your ability/drive/dedication/(obsession) to some extracurricular activity. It’s especially true for the top film schools that they are looking for applicants that have a demonstrated passion and talent. Look at the advice at the top of the film and arts forum, and don’t wait 2.5 years.

Whoops…not this forum; I meant the top three or your threads in the Visual Arts and Film Majors forum.

Not a big “name brand” but consider Univ. of NC-Wilmington

“third largest film production center in the United States which is home to EUE/Screen Gems Studios, the largest film studio outside of Hollywood.”
