What is the best route for me?

Hello, I will be giving my CHSPE in a few months and I will finish high school. I thought about applying to a university in the UK (I love the UK) but I figured out that there is not undergrad then med-school system, you have to get into med-school directly (and no admissions officer would ever accept a 14 year-old). Will I have to go the SAT route or can I get a under-grad from the UK then apply to med-school in the US or Canada after I graduate.

Thanks

Bump? anyone?

AMCAS (the centalized application organization for all US medical schools) will not verify transcripts from outside the US or Canada. An un-verified applicant will not be considered for medical school admission.

Except for UVA and Harvard, no US medical school will accept applicants who have not completed at least 90 credits and all their pre-reqs at an accredited US or Canadian college or university.

Unless you are a Canadian citizen or legal resident, you will not be considered for admission to Canadian medical schools, regardless of where you obtained your bachelor’s degree.

While you can certainly get a UK baccalaureate, you will need to come back to US and take or re-take about 2.5 years of science coursework. (There are specialized programs for this, called post-bacc pre medical programs.)

Also please understand that med school admission requires much more than just grades and test scores. ECs are extremely important and it takes time to build a portfolio of appropriate activities. (And that’s something that needs to be done in the US. US med schools want applicants who have experience and familiarity working/volunteering in the US healthcare system.) There’s a saying–your stats get your application looked at, but your ECs get you invited to interview.

And you’re partially wrong about how medical education in the UK. While most UK medical programs direct admit the bulk of their students from high school, all medical programs also have what is called “graduate medical admissions”–which admits students into the final 4 years of med school (clinical training) if they have completed a experimental science baccalaureate. Unfortunately no UK med program will admit non-UK citizens/residents to the graduate medical programs.

tl;dr

If you want to attend med school in the US, you will need to take your SAT and attend college in the US.
