What is the Best thing about Berkeley

As an incoming freshmen this fall, I was just wondering what people like the most about Berkeley.

the search bar on the CC forums.

^^hey this is def not like that. i have already been to CalSO and i know about its amazing faculty and such. i was just wondering what individuals really like about it. i’m not ■■■■■■■■

I’m an out-of-stater and I admit I’ve never been to Berkeley before and have never met any Berkeley students face-to-face :frowning:
BUT originally, when I was looking for college to apply to last summer, what first attracted me to research Berkeley was the involvement it had in the 1960s Counterculture/Civil Rights movement.
For example, I had read about how 30 of Berkeley kids got arrested for rallying against the House Un-American Activities at City Hall in 1960. That, and also a cool list of 1960s people who were very active in rallying and stuff who studied at Berkeley (there’s a documentary called “Berkeley in the 60s” that I’ve been wanting to watch).

Shallow or not, it really intrigued me to look at a college where the kids were so active annnnd because I’m a sucker for counterculture/1960s history  After more research, of course, it was awesome to discover that the prestige of the eras is still going on today!! Very amazing public school

Lemon cat - are you going to be a freshman in the fall? If so, you should definitely visit if you have the chance, I have visited twice and LOVEEEEEE it , but I can understand why people don’t like it.

Yes, I’m going to be a freshman. I’m out of state so I’m packing up in 2 days to get ready for my orientation  I’m excited

wow, congrats LemonCat. I love your idealism and I think a lot of people here have that feeling about Berkeley in the back of their minds. I think it’s cool that it attracted you to Berkeley in the first place. :D

@LemonCat: You probably know this, but the majority of the protests that happen in Berkeley today are pointless and most of the students who participate in them do so only because they see it as a way to socialize or to say that they did.

I know you’re coming for the history, but if this is the case, I think a visit would have sufficed.

You’ll like it. There’s history everywhere, but it doesn’t feel old (in a good way). if you want to see something amazing go up into the trails to the north of campus, you just drive up the hills, there are bikers everywhere too. I don’t know what they’re called I’ve only been to Berkeley once, but they are really impressive and the views of the entire bay area are awe inspiring, especially at sunset. I think for me the way that the mountains were so undeveloped and have lush forests really complimented the city below.

You get to ride a roller coaster downhill for 5 secs after 4 years worth of reaching the top.

The hobo who decided to take a **** in front of me and proceeded to grunt and moan to pass a deuce definitely made coming to Berkeley worthwhile.

I hope you passed him a newspaper afterwards :)
