Could anyone please describe it to me, one of my friends described it as “a bunch of government buildings clumped together, not really with the feeling of a college campus”. would anyone agree with me or disagree. does AU have typical green quads? are the buildings in any partuclar style. thank you

I think your friend was describing GWU’s campus – which is completely integrated with the city and if you weren’t looking for it, you would be hard pressed to know that it was a college campus. So I would have to disagree, I think it’s an oasis in the surrounding city.

There is a huge green quad, at the center of all the academic buildings. There is also an outdoor amphitheater where sometimes you can convince professors to hold class on nice days. There are also bunches of trees on campus.

The buildings: The new SIS building is more modern – as it was just built and is a completely green building. Hurst, McKinley, Batille-Tompkins, the Kogod Business School and the Ward Circle Building all look academic-like. White buildings with large pillars. The other halls are smaller, off the quad, and look older with no distinctive style. As with all buildings and dorms, it’s very easy to distinguish the newer ones from the older.

The AU campus is actually an urban oasis. It’s a designated national arboretum…it’s just on a much smaller scale because the campus is very compact.

You can walk down the quad from one end of campus to the other in just a few minutes. My S lives in Anderson at the south end of the quad and he can get to his classes in Kogod at the north end of the quad in less than 4 minutes.

The buildings themselves are not beautiful, like Emory’s, for example. However, the buildings are state of the art and well maintained. The classrooms are extremely comfortable.

But the campus has a spacious green quad, and the area around the natural outdoor ampitheater is lush and beautiful.
