such as what UC Berkeley offers and a 5 year Barch as the one Rice offers? any 4 year program and 5 year program would do for my question. I mentioned Berkeley and Rice because I know they offer different programs in architecture. My main question is the main difference in those programs? what a student does after graduating for a 4 year program? do they need to go to a Master program to be able to work as architects? thanks so much.

To get registered (licensed) you must graduate from a NAAB-accredited program. None of the 4-year programs are accredited, only some 5-year BARCH, Masters and doctorate programs are. There is a list of the accredited programs on the NAAB website. You also need to pass a series of exams and complete an internship period (I think this is 3 years). This may not be true in all states, but I think most.

A good place for info that confirms what cagb1016 said is;

NAAB: ARCHITECTURE PROGRAMS

I'll add the 5yr programs get right into architecture and studio with very little general ed or core coursework. Pull up the architecture curriculum from both a 4yr and a 5yr school's website and you'll see what you're getting into for coursework.

Also keep in mind that there are 5 yr programs that are not automatic enrollment into the 5th year. At some programs after 2,3 or 4 years (depending on the school) you have to apply and be accepted into their 5th year. If you don't get in you'll have to finish your 4yr BS in arch then apply for a MArch elsewhere.
