Also, does it have a lot of weight on the college application?

<a href=“Harvard Book Award - Wikipedia”>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_Book_Award

The fact that about 2000 students get a Harvard book award every year should tell you all you need to know about its weight on a college application. Book awards (and there are a lot of them offered by various colleges’ alumni associations) are a nice addition to the “awards” list on one’s applications, but nothing more.

You know how many Harvard Book Award winners have been awarded at that nearby urban or rural HS? ZERO – ever. Why is that?

It means you happen to attend a HS that someone at the local H alumni club wants to maintain as a source of good relations/applicants. They deliver a book to the school office. It gets put in a pile with the others. The teachers choose a “worthy” junior to be recognized. One gets the Harvard award, another gets the Brown award, etc.

Alone, it means ZERO to the application process – other than it reflects that the recipient is among the top Juniors.
