what is the highest academic degree you want?

BA. that’s it. Unless the rapture comes again and I find out the only way to stop it is to get a masters, or unless I seriously need one, I’m done after next year. There’s so much more to life than just school, isn’t there?!

^ Yep, I feel the same way. I can’t imagine doing anymore school… not feeling too ambitious nowadays.

I am wondering, what’s everyone’s motive for getting a PhD? Do you guys really enjoy academics to that level and don’t mind making a career out of it by becoming a professor? Or do you guys want the PhD to be more employable/higher salary jobs? Or is it just the mentality that you guys should do as much as you can in academia as you can?

^ For me, I love the academics and I love the lifestyle that professors enjoy (my dad’s a professor, so I know this pretty well). It’s such a chill life, even though salaries are only decent. The instant respect from everyone is also super nice.

^I enjoy academics a lot. Maybe a lot of people don’t care about school and view it as a “chore,” but I find my field (Political Science) very interesting and relevant. I have a passion and a strong interest for it, and I would like to study it in the future, conduct research, and teach.

bump this thread. I really wanna see what other people think!!

Eh I want to go for a JD after my Bachelors, so that would put me at like 24/25?

Honestly, I’m hesitant of even committing to 3 yrs of a JD, I don’t know how you guys can go for PhD (30s when you’re done), that is, unless you want to become a professor.

PhD! Stay in school! shelters self in bubble of school to avoid the real world

Although I guess research for a PhD is just like a low-paying job.

I definitely do want to go for an MS, but only after I work for a while. My main priority is to get my EECS BS, get a job, and pay off the student loans. Hopefully I’ll get a job with a company that will pay for me to go for an EE MS after a few years; if not, I’ll be saving money for it anyways.

As for a Ph.D, I really don’t know. I’m not ruling it out, but as of now, spending an additional 5 - 7 years in school doesn’t really mesh with my career goals.

Since I’m not sure about a Ph.D, I’ve figured it might be a better idea for me to go to a CSU rather than a UC for the MS. Cal Poly SLO is a really nice campus, and since I’m going to Berkeley for undergrad, I’d definitely like to go to Cal Poly for grad school. Plus, it’s cheaper, and I think at the graduate level, I’d definitely like their “learn by doing” approach.

peeeee ayyyyych deeeeeeeeeeee

I want a PhD but more realistically I’ll end up getting a Master’s  Crap is expensive for an out-of-stater!!!

Not in college yet, but after my Bachelor’s, I’m gonna pursue a PharmD.

I want to get a PhD (hopefully at UCB).

30

Kind of an old thread. Reading my response on the first page, I’ve already changed goals and it’s only been two months. How interesting…

^ No more PhD?

Master’s - I want real world experience before I get it.
I don’t want anyone calling me Dr.

^^ bump to hear the answer to singh2010’s question

I want a PhD too, you guys. That way I can look like a WoW mage during graduation with my epic cloak and hood and stuff.

lol jk I actually enjoy academics and wouldn’t mind spending the rest of my life at school, probably as a professor/researcher (hopefully). Plus it’s one of the few things besides a possible JD that my BA in philosophy will get me… >.< we’ll see though.

Get both dude.

It’s always handy to have a PhD and a professional degree.

Probably a J.D. I’m still undecided as for my post-grad plans, but law school seems the most likely route. If not law school, then a Masters in probably International Relations or History. A PhD…no. Maybe my thoughts will change a few years down the road, but by the time I finish a J.D and Masters, I’d probably be around…31? Eek. If I find a field that I really could say "I see myself pursuing research in this subject for the rest of my life " then I might rethink it. I can’t say I’ve found that yet though. Good luck to everyone who intends to get a PhD though. Hope you all stick with it :]
