What is the most significant challenge that society faces today?

So, "What is the most significant challenge that society faces today?"

I was thinking of just putting "Human nature" and leaving it at that, but I was worried I might offend someone -- even though I kind of like this better than what I put. ;)

Anyway, here's mine:

Apathy. But I'm not sure if I care enough to write any more on it.

haha, I like that :]

I put interracial marriages…some are against, some are for…said it was a family/community issue.

That seems really touchy . . .

QuantumArbiter, I think evertheoptimist is right about how it SOUNDES…perhaps you talked said the problem is people thinking interracial marriage is a problem? If not, that does seem pretty touchy…

Anyone else wrote something somewhat “risky”?

I wrote about the existence of God for my intellectually engaging supplement. Kinda regretted that after submitting, but I basically described a discussion/debate our class had once about whether or not god existed, and I tied it in with Adler’s pursuit of truth theory.

Why is interracial relationships a touchy subject? Its a legitimate controversial subject, and I simply pointed it out.

I did not pick a side. I simply stated its a dilemma my family faces as well. There’s nothing “risky” about it.

@Stanfordlover92: I wrote about God’s existence (parallels of physics and religion) as my intellectual vitality essay! Hahaha.

I guess my perspective is just different. In my community, interracial relationships are incredibly common and are not controversial at all. With that point of view, when I heard you say that interracial relationships are a challenge, I read it as meaning that interracial relationships are a problem.

I said worldwide poverty and closing the widening income gap between the
wealthy and the impoverished.

I used apathy as well, but I was serious about it. Dang, I wish I’d made it witty like your answer, haha!

I talked about the inaction people resolve themselves to, unbeknownst to their full potential and all they can achieve, and how we must all come together and give life our best effort to make a difference and bring about change.

I guess all that in 175 characters? Lol.

^ I talked about apathy, too, but yeah, no wit at all. :(

Energy Policy - we are running out of it and have to figure out how to deal with that reality.

I talked about an incident of my pregnant aunt. how a pregnant woman stands on a subway train and all we see is blank stares, faces hidden behind newspapers: ignorance…restoring chivalry and courteous values in our society is indeed a great challenge.

Pretty sure I said this too.

Interesting. This isn’t really the place for argument, but I feel that most chivalry is dead and for good reason. I’m a feminist though (i.e., I would have suggested - instead of everyone assuming she was somehow invalid given her pregnancy - that she assert herself and just ask).

I wrote about lacking human morality in the world, so kind of similar to human nature. I said we don’t have the morality necessary to use technology responsibly, instead we start wars and destroy ecosystems.

And for my intellectual vitality answer I wrote about reading the Subtle Knife when I was younger. How one part of it made me think about the interconnection between the atoms and molecules that make up the world. Like how a water molecule in my body right now will one day make it into the Indian Ocean.

The His Dark Materials triology is easily one of the best sets of books I’ve ever read. There were a lot of layers - I can only imagine how much must have flown over my head. Little things were different in Lyra’s world. Electrons were inside the nucleus, John Calvin was the Pope and the papacy was at Geneva…

@applicannot haha. cool! I said it because of my background. It is nice to know that I’m not the only one who thinks that though.

Energy. For sure.

Me too. I’m a QuestBridge Match, but I know that poverty in America is heaven on earth compared to poverty elsewhere.
