What is the pre-med program like?

Does anyone have any experience with the pre-med program? I’d be entering as a freshman, regular college. Do they offer students internships or volunteer hours at their medical school? Do they have partnerships with other hospitals or clinics?

Thanks!

Any experiences?

Is pre-med even a major? My student’s roommate is currently in the med school application process. She is a typical biology major. From Day 1 freshman year, she had a check-list of what medical schools look for and started checking those boxes. For example, the MCAT was recently changed to include a psychology component. So she chose to minor in psychology to learn about that test section and show a liberal arts side. Medical schools like volunteering with low-income populations – she volunteered at the Columbia Free Clinic. She actively looked for a job in a USC bio lab and then parlayed that into being able to do her own research. During the summers, she fit her shadowing hours in between her hours at a clerical job she needed to help pay for college expenses, Of course, being an honors student and getting a stellar score on the MCAT was helpful in getting her admitted to 3 medical schools so far.

In short, whatever college and major you choose, purposefully seek opportunities that will build your med school application resume. You also will need the best grades possible so select courses wisely to maximize your GPA. Good luck!
