What is the psat used for?

yo my fellows, i got a 240 but just realized its worth nothing.

it is worth merit $$$$ at lots of colleges
.

naw but good colleges dont give money. is it any use getting into colleges?

That’s impressive! I’m assuming with a score like that you are looking at ivies… so it’s like a cute little gold star on top of your future perfect SAT. Although when you have a 2400 SAT I would question how much a 240 PSAT score would help you… But yes, big $ at a lot of places.

“good colleges dont give money”

oh really??? USC isnt good? Chicago isnt good? Wash U isnt good?
yes, Ivys dont give $$ cause they dont have to to attract top students. but lots of other “good” colleges do offer merit scholarships to students they really want.

It will help you considerably in applying to Highly selective summer programs such as Telluride, which helps tremendously when applying to colleges.

And FYI, University of Chicago gives some money to National Merit finalists and USC (University of Southern California) awards $21,000 scholarships to national merit finalists, selected based on their PSAT performance, who named USC as their first choice school.

“USC (University of Southern California) awards $21,000 scholarships to national merit finalists, selected based on their PSAT performance, who named USC as their first choice school”
IF they are accepted, that is. NMSF have no assurance of acceptance at USC.

but getting in to college, it’s no use? no place to put psat score, no place to even mention my score. good thing i didnt study too hard for the psat :P

bob, the PSAT means nothing if you dont ALSO take the SAT AND score above a certain level- min 2200. . Your WILL be able to say you are a NMSF on your college applications- one of only 15000 in the country, if you do take the SAT and do well on it- no small feat.

It’s great for generating junk mail. Plus National Merit Scholars usually get their name in the local paper. And even if you go to the snootiest school around you might get a $2500 scholarship.

Bob, did you not read/understand what I said about the PsAT and highly selective summer programs? Try applying to a few of them.
