I currently attend college in Kentucky and I plan to move to Boston upon graduation. I am a junior and I am majoring in finance and I want to specifically go into investments. Living in the Greater Cincinnati Area, I know the industry I am wanting to go into is very limited in the area I currently reside. I am a self-funded college student and paying for college in Boston would be very costly. But I also realize that by going to school up there would greatly increase my chances of finding and securing a good job in my desired field that could very easily pay back the costs of attending college in Boston. Any and all advice is welcome! Thank you!
Even absent tuition costs, Boston is an expensive city to live in.
What exactly do you mean by self-funded? Are you eligible for need based aid? Are your parents not willing to fund any of your costs? How are you planning to self fund?
I am eligible for need based aid and I would definitely apply for merit based scholarships as well. My father is not in my life and my mother unfortunately cannot help me with college funds. I currently work and plan to work regardless of where I am at so I plan to self-fund myself through work.
That doesn’t fully answer the question. Information that would help:
- What is your FAFSA EFC?
- Is your dad deceased, completely unreachable, or low income?
- Are you under the age of 24?
I don’t understand the question. Are you moving to Boston for Grad School or for a job? If its the latter, then why are you asking about paying for college in Boston? @dreinert95
@intparent My FAFSA EFC is less than $10,000; my dad is low income and yes I am 21 years old
@suzyQ7 I would be moving to Boston to finish my undergrad
I would continue your degree at your current university. Getting a job even when transferring to Boston is not a guarantee but the student loans are. You’d likely have to take out both stafford federal loans and private loans. As a finance major you should know that this is a poor investment.
also private student loans hover around 9-12%. Just something to consider
I would also recommend to finish in Kentucky, however, search hard for summer internships in Boston for next summer. Are you a sophomore? Junior? Getting a paid internship would get you roots in Boston and there are a lot of corporations out there. Use the career services office at your school and apply everywhere.
