<p>Specifically the informatics major. I searched this forum and I can't find anything about the informatics major specifically.</p>
<p>I know there is a "cognate" specialty you can go into and my interests include business and biology.</p>
<p>What exactly can I do with a BS in Informatics though? Is it basically a girl version of computer science (not my words, I read this from various sources)?</p>
<p>I know bioinformatics is a hot field right now and I would like to go into that.</p>
<p>Does the informatics degree provide job security? I checked the employment stats for SOIC and they said 78% of their grads last year went onto grad school or got a full time job and 9 months later 90% of their grads were in grad school or got a full time job.</p>
<p>Although I am in Kelley, I took an Informatics class to satisfy a Gen Ed requirement. I would definitely recommend taking INFO-I101 because it counts as a Gen Ed for most majors and is a great introduction to the School of Informatics.</p>
<p>I’m pretty sure the SOIC was the first school of its kind and is great option for IU students. I know it is a smaller, community-oriented school (as compared to Kelley), which was something I really liked when I spent time there. The main building is really cool, and I know it has some very successful alumni.</p>
<p>Just so you know, I’m almost certain you have to choose a cognate within the SOIC, I don’t think it is optional. I know many students who are interested in business technology major in Informatics, Business Cognate and get a Business minor from Kelley. </p>
<p>If you are considering this major, talk to an SOIC advisor and take INFO-I101!</p>
<p>The School of Informatics and Computing has a wonderful reputation actually! There are many successful people who go through the school and everyone thus far I have met in it are very helpful when it comes to informing students of events going on and how to succeed in the future. There are several career fairs specifically for students in it to help them find jobs and internships.</p>
<p>The Informatics major is basically how technology is implemented in a variety of different fields which is why you are required to pick a cognate to go along with it. It’s definitely not just a girl version of Computer Science since Comp Sci is the study of systems with applied mathematics and engineering…</p>
<p>INFO I-101 is an incredibly helpful course anyways because it teaches basic HTML, SQL, and a whole lot of knowledge that will be helpful in the workplace. I would definitely recommend taking it even if you don’t want to be in the major because it allows you to add other skills to your resume that gives you a leg up in the competition. However, the degree alone does add a lot of extra benefits after graduation since technology is becoming extremely integrated in the workforce today.</p>
<p>I’m in Kelley and my adviser gave me Info-I 101. It’s 4 credit hours though so it seems daunting. After reading what you guys wrote, I actually think this course will be very beneficial someday even if I do not minor in Informatics.</p>
