I'm thinking of applying for Informatics at IU. However,I seldom see reviews from any forum online that discuss about SOIC of IU. Is it not a very famous department of IU or no one really interested in Informatics?

I see no one has responded. I checked out the program this past fall. Informatics is a growing area. Companies like Google and any company that needs a background in data base work–like search. My son is more interested in hard core CS–like developing a game engine, but I think the CS and Informatics departments as IU can offer a very solid core background in the various technologies. You will want to learn how to work within a group and to develop critical thinking. I have been a publisher for computer books for over 25 years–and I think IU can be a good choice for any student who is interested in growing trends and providing a solid foundation of skills. Good luck

Through my own little research, I find this new area rather interesting too. But because most of my friends will be taking CS and not many seem to know about Informatics, that’s why I’m a little doubtful to just decide on taking this major. Some online reviews did not give clear explanations about it and some commented that it’s like “computing for the girls”. Anyway,I’m starting to build my confidence that it might be the type of computing that I want, a interdisciplinary course where I can learn to apply new technologies in any other field. Besides, I’m also applying for CIT at Purdue and CIS at Ohio State. It’s not easy to decide on which is the best for me.
Thanks a lot for replying and for the information. Merry Christmas :)
