What is the eligibility criteria?
When do you have to apply by?
How do you apply?
Do you have to enroll into an in-state college?

Even though the Byrd Scholarship is federally-funded, each state can have different ways of applying and different eligibility criteria, so the best thing to do in order to get your questions answered is to do an internet search for “Byrd Scholarship” and your state.

My daughter has a Byrd scholarship. She applied through her school in Louisiana. It is $1,500 a year.

How do you apply? Where do you apply from? I tried googling but I can’t seem to find the application.

They tell you to contact your state education agency (SEA). What happens after that?

It depends upon the individual state. Our state awards it base on stats. The high school sends the applications to the state and then the state decides on who gets it.

You need to go through your HS counselor to get the scholarship. There are limited scholarships for each school so the counselor is the one to decide who is eligible (usually GPA) and then which applications are forwarded on. They are $1500/yr. and are renewable. YMMV

Heads up. I was awarded one for fall 2010 and have yet to recieve it so have a back up financial plan if you do get it.

While true for your state, as posted before, states vary in how they administer the Bryd. For instance, in our state, you fill out a form that is used for many different scholarships, including the Byrd. This form includes activities, grades, test scores, essays and other information. Our state doesn’t have a limit for each HS, there are a specified number of awards per Congressional District.

My daughter’s award (NY) was based on her SAT scores. Guidance counselor had her fill out a very simple questionnaire. It seems that many of the awards were very late in coming to the schools this year.
