The typical asian thread has me curious. What is typical Indian applicant? I have an Indian friend who hopes to go into medicine... do Indians have a disadvantage when applying to schools for their medical program?

well all asians in general have the same ec's... piano, tennis, NHS, volunteer hours, 4.0 uw gpa, 2300+ SAT.... there all the same. And these people wonder why they get rejected from Stanford SCEA....

High GPA/SAT (3.9-4.0/2300-2400)

Tough course load, and therefore high rank

Piano/Violin

Hospital Volunteering

Interested in Math and Science

Sports (if any): Soccer, Tennis, maybe swimming

I really hope I stand out from that. o_o And weird, I was thinking of making this thread today too.

You might not have a disadvantage, but it's true that almost ALL Indians want to study medicine. I would know, cuz I'm Indian, lol. They also very similar EC's, and classes taken, so I suggest your friend does something that really stands out, that's well...maybe not so typical for an Indian applicant.

I'm Indian, but I want to go into either English or Journalism. Do you think that will stand out?

What if I have Indian roots and heritage, but I have a British passport? Is that treated in the same was as a "fully" Indian applicant?

wow, I didn't realize that the hospital volunteering card was so overplayed with Indians, but it makes sense. Do you think it is different for Indian girls vs. Indian guys?

I'm Indian as well. I have won two national poetry contest awards in addition to all of the "typical indian stats"... Will the poetry awards stand out in my favour?

I don't think being Indian or Armenian has much bearing on your application or even yourself, for that matter. If youre a fit at a particular university, you get in, else, you dont.

gouchicago - I hope it is that way. It's annoying people make generalizations that "all applicants from country x are like so, and if they don't meet the standards of that country then they aren't fit to be in this college..."

Is it ever like that?

bump ..........

i think the question is badly phrased, it should be whats a typical white applicant
which would be

Low GPA/SAT (3.0-3.5/2000-2200)
- unchallenging courseload, and therefore low rank
- Guitar, singing, cheerleading
- Fundraising
- Interested in liberal arts
- bad at science and math
- Sports (if any): Football

There's no "typical" applicant. If two Asian applicants seem strikingly similar, even two (or more) American applicants may seem so. Therefore it would be best not to assume things about an applicant from his/her ethnicity.
