i personally thinks that depends on your major..for me the best university in the world is USC..why?because i´m interested in films and USC has the best program and a lot of connections which is very important in this field. Also it is located in L.A , which is the perfect place for filmmakers.

so in my humble opinion the best university is a place that combines a strong departament in your field, great diversity, top notch facilities, interesting and knowledgeable professors.

I’m not going to choose which university I think is best, simply because I don’t know much about higher education outside of the US, but here are some criteria to consider:

Quality of facilities, including laboratories, libraries, concert halls, and computer technology, as well as their accessibility to students

Breadth and depth of the courses offered. E.g. breadth would mean the number of disciplines covered, and depth would be the number of courses available in each discipline

Opportunities after graduation - placement into graduate schools and reputation with prospective employers

Either the availability of a major cutural center near the university (i.e. a city) or an allocation of funds for frequent travel to the nearest city/metropolis

Availability of hands-on experience, both in internships and in research.

Professors whose first priority is teaching students, as well as professors with world-renowned research under their belts.

The above are in no particular order. I’ve tried to choose criteria that can be quantified, though there are obviously many other factors that can make a great school.

^^ and I am so proud of the first two posters, who never even hinted at HYPS. The best college/university depends partially on you, your major, and your preferences, not just some oft-touted school and its bloated prestige.

I was about to say the above comment, but since she already said it, I’ll just detail it for you.

Your major: U of R will always be better than SUNY Binghampton (very good state school) in the sciences. SUNY Binghampton beats U of R in its business majors. That’s just the way it works.

Preferences: No one can say a college is better overall because of personal preferences, therefore a college must be ranked PERSONALLY. Two people may have totally opposite opinions about the campus scenery, dorms, library, and more at any specific college. Preferences never rank a college.

Prestige: Does attending Princeton matter if you’re going to medical school? Nope. Law school? Yep. Prestige determines your fate for graduate school (in most cases). An exception would be medicine. ^

Quality: This probably helps determine a school’s “rank” or reputation. Student/faculty ratio, accessibility to professors, attitude of faculty towards students, etc. I put this as the 2 on my list of most important factors when selecting a college. (Number 1 would be the curriculum.)

Cafetaria: Just kidding…

To end my lame, boring opinion, I’ll say that there may be over a hundred items to consider when picking out a college. Ranks are for people whose parents want to go around saying “My son attends Columbia!” yet their own parents can’t even say what makes a public university different from a private one, other than the 30K difference in price. I intentionally offended many CC’s. Please don’t form a riot and get me kicked off the website. Thank you.
