Is it easy to get around Charlottesville, or would you need a car? Is there a lot to do around the university?

I just need some general knowledge about the actual university and its surroundings, thanks!

I just need some general knowledge about the actual university and its surroundings, thanks!

It is very easy to get around Charlottesville and no you don't need a car (first years are not allowed them anyway). You can take the University bus to Barracks Road where they have 2 grocery stores, many clothing stores (Old Navy, Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren Rugby [only the second one in the country],etc), as well as tons of places to eat. You can also ride the charlottesville buses for free, they have one that goes out to the indoor mall as well as one to the downtown (outdoor) mall.

Thanks so much for the fast reply :)

It sounds easy enough to get around.

Whats the weather like? Hows campus life?

Sorry about the bombardment of questions.

where is the outdoor mall?

downtown, if you follow main street away from UVa you will run into it.

Downtown.

They used to hold free concerts at "Fridays after 5" on the downtown mall. Although, Coran Capshaw, manager of the Dave Matthews Band, bought the rights and is building a new 3,500-seat amphitheatre on the site (which is still under construction). So, Fridays may be held at a different location this year and will probably now have a fee.

What are the names of the indoor/outdoor malls?

the indoor mall is "Fashion Square Mall" and it is out route 29. The downtown mall is the "Downtown Mall" -- its a closed street with restuarants and stores (Not any big chain stores). Its a lot of fun to hang out on, like they have trick or treating for c-ville kids on the downtown mall around halloween, there are 2 movie theaters on the mall (a regular one and a low price theater) there is also an ice skating rink with great deals ($3.75 to skate and a $.25 to rent skates).

There are also bars and music halls in c-ville like Starr Hill -- they tend to be pretty accessible by bus or just walking. They also bring in good music but smaller bands. Then there's always the Corner with restuarants and bars and Rugby with the frats.

And UPC on grounds tries to keep a lot going, this year they brought The Roots to a concert at U-hall, along with planning numerous other events.

if I follow main street in which direction? toward the Best Western? or toward the Red Roof Inn

from grounds towards the red roof inn, you should pass the train station, and restuarants. Keep going, you'll see the sign for it. Or if you are on grounds, just hop on the Trolley and it will take you to the downtown mall.

thanks!....

To those who have studied in UVa or live in Charlottesville:

Which are the shopping centers or areas you frequent most often and why? (Please don't list down everywhere you shop, just one or two you visit more often than the rest.)

Is there a particular place you would go if you wanted something specific? For example, do you go to a certain mall whenever you wanted to buy, say, electrical items? And why?

I would like to ask for your own personal opinion, as I guess there would be no consensus if it referred to the general student population.

Are there any clubs around the UVA area?

I live in Charlottesville. I shop most often at Barracks Road, which is a mile or so away from campus. Its got everything from clothing stores (Banana Republic, Anne Taylor Loft, Old Navy, a Wet Seal I think? Talbots) to grocery stores (Harris Teeter- lots of ready made / frozen stuff which caters to students, Kroger cheaper, kind of grungy) to video stores (Blockbuster and Hollywood video) to good places to eat (Panera, Casellas Pizza second best in town, best is Christians on the downtown mall.) Plus, an outdoors store, barbershop, salon, and HairCuttery, gourmet kitchen store, Lindt store, craft store the list goes on. OH, and a Bed Bath and Beyond, which is beyond crowded in the last weeks of August. :)

If you dont have a car, it will be hard to get to the mall (Fashion Square, a Simon mall with the basics- look it up online) and the strip, which has the Wall Mart, Sams, K-Mart, chain restraints, etc.

For boutique type shopping, go to the downtown mall. In fact, go to the downtown mall anyway, its good for the soul.

I have a few questions:

1) Do they have AnF or Hollister in Charlottesville?
2) Is it possible to bike to Charlottesville (if you don't have a car...)?

if they don't you can buy online from both of those stores

There is an A&F at fashion square there is no hollister. Yes you could bike from grounds to the downtown mall or to barracks road, but fashion square is too far from grounds and on a very busy road.

do any of you play netball for clubs or know people who do?

how far is:

Lake Taylor High School, Norfolk

from campus, and also, is there any netball nearby or in Charlottesville?

I have no idea what netball is but Norfolk is about 3 hours away.
