What is this moderator you all speak of?

I don’t get it. What does a moderator do? Is this a real person who sits at the computer all day reading frantic, obsessive posts? Help me understand.

I used to wonder when I was new to chat forums, too. A moderator is much like a school supervisor who strolls around CC all day and tries to keep us in line. If a thread is offensive, he puts it in detention, ie. locks it. If kids go to wrong classes, e.g. posting about Harvard on the Yale board, he moves them to the right rooms. But there is one thing that makes him different from a school supervisor. He is not hated. (Except maybe, for some people, the 60-second rule and 10-character limit.) All in all, we really appreciate him for what he does for us -- keeping CC alive! (I don't know how many moderators there are. Excuse my using the male pronoun "he." I'm not a sexist. I'm referring to all you moderators out there.)

Hope that clarifies your question, ahimsa.

so does the mod sit in front of the comp all day reading every single post?

And does he get paid to do this? (Or is it just one of us, the obsessing parents, who couldn't let go?)

silver_wavez, 1moremom: Yes, I think so, but I think they do have coffee breaks. :) LOL... No, I don't know. Maybe they are mods only as a hobby, or maybe it's their job. I don't know whether they get paid.

However, if you want my opinion, I think they're employees (and founders) of CC. Aside from correcting people's essays and other services (check out the ads on top), they take care of this forum in their free time.

Mods, correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Dave Berry and I are CC founders, and Sally Rubenstone is an early-stage partner and senior college counselor. Dave and Sally head up our college counseling team that works with individual families and high schools.

The rest of the mods are volunteers who want to help carry out the mission of this forum: to provide a place where students and parents can come to learn about college admissions, share their experiences, and help each other through this challenging time of life. Many, many families have neither direct experience with the admissions process nor access to good high school college counseling, and we hope that we can fill some of those gaps with our forum. Our mods do a great job of keeping CC a friendly, helpful place to learn and share.

Yes, you do do a great job. CC is very valuable. It has helped me a lot. Thank you very much Roger Dooley, Dave Berry, Sally Rubenstone, and all volunteers! Please don't ever let CC die!
