i’m going into my senior year of high school and i’ve looked at all kinds of colleges around the U.S. i live in virginia and while most of the schools i’m particularly interested in are out of state, i definitely want to see what schools in virginia i might want to go to next year. i have a handful of friends going to UVA this upcoming year but i really haven’t gotten much information about the actual atmosphere of the school and pretty much only have stereotypes (white, rich, preppy, etc.) to go off of. of course i’d like to tour it and see for myself, but could anyone give me some insight here? i want to study something along the lines of government, public relations, etc. and the school’s campus, atmosphere, and student body would play a huge factor in me deciding whether i want to really consider attending UVA or not. i value diversity and progressive values a LOT and i know UVA isn’t known for being the most liberal school out there, but the name of the school would look great for me and the academics would be outstanding, i’m sure. thanks!
You should try to do an overnight through the Monroe Society.
It is a big enough university that everyone can find a group where they are comfortable. The U. is much more diverse than it was 30 years ago - internationally, geographically, and culturally.
Come and visit! I think some people are holding onto some pretty old stereotypes when they try to describe this place. We have grown a lot over the years.
*There are 15,000 undergraduates here
*There are 7 schools and the College of Arts & Sciences (which houses the majors you listed) is the largest, with the most variety/flexibility when it comes to academic programs)
*There are [961 student organizations on the books](- @UVA)
There is something for everyone here. The environment? It’s a beautiful place (gorgeous buildings, lots of green space) and when the students are here, there’s constant activity.
I came back from my orientation a week ago, and I can honestly say that that stereotype is not as present as it is made out to be. Sure you meet some girls and guys who are preppy but in no way did that make them snobbish or rude. I come from out of state and am Hispanic, and I was pleased that i saw a good amount of diversity. I truly found that the only “for sure” vibe that UVa gives off is that it is a university that captures intelligent students who are in awe of the academical village. You feel so close history there…if that makes any sense? Also, the town is super cozy. Some college towns can feel a bit isolated, but Charlottesville is more than just a college town. It holds character that isn’t dependent on the university and you really feel that when you are there. When you are in downtown Charlottesville or even on the Corner you feel a sense of warmth and comfort that you kind of hope for and look for in most small towns. Overall, I think it is a great place. I’ve always been a city person: grew up in Phoenix, was really torn between NYU and Charlottesville, but there is something about the university and this town that makes it unforgettable. There will always be a niche for you at UVa so I wouldn’t worry about the stereotypes and comments about the student, but I do suggest for you to visit. UVa wasn’t near the top of my list until I visited it, and I got to saw what everyone had been talking about.
