What is typically Chinese?

Hey folks!

Could you tell me what comes into your mind when you think of Chinese people, culture, and especially contemporary modern life?

What is typical?

About the people, I first think of my uncle (who is half Chinese). And with him, I associate... those golden statues (I don't know what they're called?), red sticks of incense sticking out from those sand-filled plates, and Chinese New Year's money envelopes which are always sweet to get. Also those hexagonal plates that he's hung all over the doors with the mirror in the middle that are supposed to ward off bad spirits.

About China in general, the thing that comes to mind is the child restriction policy because it's so overpopulated there... I remember reading about it ages ago, so I don't know what's new with that policy now. After that comes those tiny cars that have just been launched in China and that some US car company is trying to import to the US (I can't remember which one, though).

What an interesting question (chinese myself).

All I know is that popular media depicts the common chinese man in china wearing a triangular straw hat, having small eyes, and speaking like this: "ching cong chang".

Ahhhh yes, ching chong and chang. About China, I think communism. About Chinese people, I picture small squintied eyed people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKnloiM-0Ns&search=crazy%20asian%20mother

Chinese language = LOUD
THe first image that comes into mind is a chinese guy, eating his lunch (usually rice + pork), speaking really loud (in chinese), and chewing with his mouth open.
Another picture I get is a chinese girl defying teacher's orders. Also, I picture a friendly but quiet chinese girl working by herself in the corner of the room.

I go to a fairly large chinese-populated school so I've becom accustomed to their culture .. we always have cultural things happening around the school, usually oriented around the chinese culture, eg chinese valentines day, chinese new year, etc.. Also, we have a section in compulsory history dedicated to the chinese history so everyone knows all of MaoZedong, Chiang Kaishek, The red march, etc..
Modern life... hmm I dont really know. I imagine tall blue buildings with millions of people walking around.

Students running away from home or leaping from buildings because they only got 98% on the math quiz.

hot guys and not-so-hot girls.

arrogance. no offence, but that's what comes to my mind.
PS what's up with all these asian topics lately?

Because asians are cool. ;)

of course. but i dont think the rest of the world agrees

"Students running away from home or leaping from buildings because they only got 98% on the math quiz."

Lol.

The Great Wall of China and Mongolians.

From an ABC's point of view:

An almost comical inability to market goods successfully. We pale in comparison to South Koreans.

You know the difference between image and reality? Traditional Chinese Culture placed a heavy emphasis on reality as opposed to image.

Getting conquered by nomadic peoples only to sinicize them centuries later.

Highly critical of ourselves and others.

Yup, that's how I view my own people.

ABC here, too.

chopsticks. and lots of red.

over-controlling parents and students that think that they're not doing well enough. basically, high expectations and overachieving standards.

piano. violin. cello.

girls dating white guys.

"4. girls dating white guys."

no.

girls dating white, hispanic, black guys.

"4. girls dating white guys."

I think it can be reconstructed as:

Self Hatred (usually comes in the form of girls who don't want a god damned thing to do with their race).

or chinese guys being really unconfident, pushing the girls of their own race to the typically more confident, "different," and interesting white guys

Not too many play sports

"or chinese guys being really unconfident, pushing the girls of their own race to the typically more confident, "different," and interesting white guys"

That's not really self hate so much as Asian men being pussies.

Let's stop mutating my line... thanks.
